Data visualization is the graphic representation of data. (graphic means picture) It involves producing images and symbols that communicate relationships among the represented data. You can use color, shape, symbols, length, thickness, placement etc. Below are some different ways to represent data. You can see some other here. Don't stick to these ideas- use your imagination to think of different ways to show your data!
Data collected from a neighborhood clean-up, each type of trash is assigned a color and the length of the line is determined by how much was collected. The visualization takes the shape of a stream because most of our neighborhood litter ends up in streams then in the Chesapeake Bay.
Here the same type of data collected from a clean-up is displayed differently. Each type of trash is again assigned a color but there is a hatch mark for each piece of trash. The stream shape is used again because most of our neighborhood litter ends up in streams then in the Chesapeake Bay.
Take a walk and see what shapes you can find around your neighborhood! This is the raw data from our walk, we recorded the number of each shape with tally marks. For our data visualization, we decided to make a line for each shape and draw a picture of each one we counted. Because there were so many of some of the shapes, we decided to use a different version of the symbol for groups of 5, so the color shapes represent 5 and the black shapes represent 1. That means there were 12 squares spotted. How many triangles were there?
