ARTS AWARD (SILVER)

DRAMA OR MUSIC PATHWAY

creativity is intelligence having fun”

Albert Einstein, Theoretical physicist

Course Overview

The Silver Arts Award enables students to develop their existing arts practice and arts leadership skills, underpinned by knowledge of their own art form and its relationship to arts provision in the community. There is no prerequisite ability or level and students may and may focus on a discipline from Music, Dance, Drama or elsewhere. They demonstrate their artistic imagination in their own art form and the ability to implement appropriate responses to challenges.

Students develop their ability to analyse situations, design appropriate action plans and review outcomes. They demonstrate effective communication in a range of situations, showing an ability to convey information and provide some justification for their approach.

Students create a personal arts portfolio containing evidence of their experiences. These portfolios can be in any format, including digital.

The drama pathway will centre on theatre, devising scripts and participating in performance pieces, along with essential theatre visits.

What will you study?

Silver Arts Award has two units:

The two Silver Arts Award units contain distinct activities and must be evidenced separately, even if the units are undertaken concurrently. Unit 1 is about arts practice and art form development and Unit 2 is about developing leadership skills in the arts.

Entry Requirements

This course is open to students entering both Years 9 & 10.

Students will need to be genuinely passionate about the arts and have a specific suitable skill or interest related to the arts as well as a desire to challenge themselves to develop this further and push themselves beyond their comfort zone. There is no prerequisite skill or ability level. This may be a discipline within dance, drama, music or something else from the broader world of arts. Students will be challenged to be independent and critical about their art form; they will need to be highly motivated and proactive.

The drama pathway will centre on theatre, devising scripts and participating in performance pieces, along with essential theatre visits.

Please note there is a maximum number of 25 places for this subject and it does also need a minimum of 10 students to run. If the course is oversubscribed, preference will be given to students entering Year 10. Any new Year 9 students who miss out will then be given priority should they wish to take this qualification when they enter Year 10.

Can I study this with other additional qualifications?

This is a decision which should be made dependent upon each student. Some students have successfully managed the demands of two programmes, please take into account the demands on a student's time in relation to outside of school activities and sporting commitments. This programme can effectively support a student's  participation in the Oxbridge programme and will also complement after school rehearsal commitments if students' are going to be in the school production/concerts throughout the year.
