Self Advocacy (self-ad·vo·ca·cy) the action of representing oneself or one's views or interests.
At WHS we want students to speak up for themselves when they or someone else needs help or assistance with something they are struggling with. Student voice matters! This includes both social and academic situations.
Why is this important?
At WHS we want students to speak up for themselves when they or someone else needs help or assistance with something they are struggling with. Student voice matters! This includes both social and academic situations. It is encouraged that the student is the first person to communicate any struggles with the staff as they have the most complete understanding of the situation and can be addressed in a timely fashion.
When will you need to utilize this skill?
Students will need to self advocate when they are struggling to learn or master a concept or skill or when they are experiencing a difficult social situation.
What will students do to practice these skills?
Students can advocate for themselves by speaking with or emailing their teacher and asking to schedule a time to meet to discuss any issues that they may have. Self advocacy is the most effective when students reach out before they have received a poor grade or have been unable to complete an assignment.
How will teachers help students master these skills?
Teachers will encourage students to self advocate by providing opportunities for students to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses and by giving students appropriate options to voice their questions, concerns, and ideas.
