Accountability (ac·count·a·bil·i·ty) - the fact or condition of being accountable; responsibility.
At WHS students should expect that teachers give varying deadlines depending on the size and scope of the assignment but all deadlines are meant to be met by the students. High school deadlines are created for a purpose so students are keeping up with their learning during the appropriate time that part of the curriculum is being covered.
Why is this important?
An accountable person does not spend time on distracting activities or unproductive behavior that impedes learning, growth, or achieving goals/content when appropriate and could miss valuable information for assessments. Meeting deadlines is a measure of accountability and they exist so students are keeping up with their learning during the time that part of the curriculum is being covered. Not completing assignments or submitting them late, also means that students are rushing and not producing high quality work because they are not learning the content when appropriate and could miss valuable information for assessments.
When will you need to utilize this skill?
Accountability is important inside and outside of the classroom. Students need to be accountable during their classes and when participating in sports, clubs, and extracurricular activities.
What will students do to practice these skills?
Students will practice accountability by keeping track of their materials, adhering to deadlines, recording important information, like meeting times, practice schedules, and game schedules, and showing up on time. Students will also make an effort to use class time wisely and appropriately so that meeting a deadline is possible.
How will teachers help students master these skills?
Teachers will teach core skills that are applicable in multiple classes and content areas. Students are responsible for applying these core skills in their various classes when appropriate. At WHS students should expect that teachers will give varying deadlines depending on the size and scope of the assignment but all deadlines are meant to be met by the students. Students who do not hold themselves accountable should expect to receive lower grades and/or less credit on assignments.
