The music siren is often classified into two generations. We'll discuss both of them below.
To understand how the music siren works, let's first understand the principles of a basic warning siren.
An electromechanical warning siren has two primary parts: a rotor and a stator. The rotor is powered either by a motor or a hand crank and spins at high speeds (typically over 2500 rpm.) The rotor and stator both have holes (called ports) that, when the rotor is spun, chops air and creates a pulse. This creates a sound wave, in which the frequency will increase with more ports or more speed. In general, the only factor that can affect a siren's pitch is the amount of ports in the rotor and the RPM. The amount of ports in the stator does not matter as long as there is a surface to chop air on, but the siren operates more efficiently when the ports of both mechanisms match.
The first generation music siren isn't a single siren, but rather several sirens. Each of the sirens has its own unique pitch, and is equipped with an external piece that rotates above the stator. It's called a damper, and as its name suggests, it's used to accentuate a note. The damper is operated with an armature, linking to a box beside the siren, which holds an electromagnet. When the electromagnet is energized, the armature is pulled down onto the magnet, thus opening the ports and allowing sound to escape, in essence, 'playing a note'.
You can see this demonstrated in our illustrations on the right.

All sirens are connected on two shafts, and each siren has its own section that can be pulled out individually should a problem arise.

You can determine a siren's pitch (and reverse-engineer rotor speed) with the following equation: ports*speed/60=pitch. To find rotor speed, do pitch*60/ports.
Sirens naturally harmonize when they have an amount of ports that are a multiple of 5, 6, 8, and 9. Yamaha knew this and used it to their advantage by using belt drives to reduce speed for a given section of the siren. At right, you can see several different layouts of standard music siren models sold and their port ratio, RPM, and its accompanying note for each siren.
The first-generation music sirens are able to automatically play songs through a unique system that Yamaha has dubbed 'music cams'. When it is time for the music siren to play a song, a clock will trigger a motor that slowly spins a drum, on it are many raised lines that are carefully laid out and vaguely resemble a song. The lines are laid out in order from lowest to highest note, and each note has two lines, presumably the engage and disengage for an electromagnet.
A mechanism next to the drum has arms, which are in constant contact with the drum. When an arm is operated, it supplies power to the electromagnet.
When the song is done, an additional raised line on the drum ends, allowing another arm to cut off power to the motor. At that time, another mechanism (which we do not fully understand yet) selects the next song to be played.
The music siren also boasts the ability to be played manually with a keyboard.
The second-generation music siren works similarly to its predecessor, but instead of using electromagnets, pneumatic pistons are used in their place. The dampers were retained, but are located inside each siren's stator. A slot in the back of each stator allows a notch to extend from the damper where the armature attaches and operates its corresponding siren.
At this time, it is not known how exactly air is sent to each note, but it is known that the second-generation music siren runs with MIDI controls. It is also known that it is possible to play the music siren with a keyboard this way.
