Popplet is a presentation app that allows students to organize their thoughts and knowledge. This app can be used as a prewrite for students, or it can be used as a way to take notes while reading. Popplet allows students to create mind maps. These mind maps can be used to organize information, which helps students piece together a rough draft. When using Popplet, students can work collaboratively or independently. This app can be used across all grades and subject areas.

This is a short video that specifically shows how to create a Popplet.
Popplet allows users to share their creations with others. Students can show their work to a classmate for feedback, or they can work with a friend to create a mind map together. Using this feature in the classroom enhances students collaboration and motiviation. Collaborative writing has a positive affect on students and "puts [them] in the position of having to explain and defend their ideas to their peers, and thus fosters reflective thinking about their writing" (Wigglesworth & Storch, 2007, as cited in del Pilar Garcia Mayo, 2007, p. 158).
Popplet provides students with the opportunity to organize their thoughts prior to writing. This app/website aids students in creating a mind map, which is proven to "help students learn information by forcing them to organize it, add images, and color it" (Jones, Koonce, Petrich, Ruff, & Snyder, 2012). Creating this type of organization makes it easier for students to put their writing into linear form.
Popplet integrates visual learning into writing. Students, many of which are visual learnings, can use Popplet to see the layout of their ideas prior to completing a writing task. Students who use visual literacy are "expressive, innovative thinkers and problem solvers" (North Central Regional Educational Library, 2003, as cited in Tillman, 2012, p.10). This app is a great way to include visual literacy into your writing class.
