A QR code is similar to a barcode at the supermarket. Every QR code is different and is linked to different things. When the QR code is scanned, an image, text, video, or webpage can appear. QR codes can be scanned with any camera using an app!
Students are considered motivated when they appear to be engaged in the tasks and activities (Boscolo & Gelati, 2019, p. 51). In order for students to be motivated, the task needs to be authentic, interesting, and challenging (Boscolo & Gelati, 2019, p. 56). Using technology and scanning QR codes is a motivational way of presenting a writing prompt to your students. Rather than writing or presenting the prompt for students to read, have your students get involved in discovering their prompt!
The human mind represents knowledge in dual codes including language and imagery. The imagery is a visual and multimodal representation (Klein, Haug, & Bildfell, 2019, p. 163). Using QR codes is great for all types of learners! QR codes and the use of technology is helpful for kinesthetic, visual, auditory, and reading and writing learners. Students can get up and moving and use their fine and gross motor skills. Rather than text, pictures can also appear as prompts for students' writing!
Karchmer-Klein (2019) states that collaborative writing experiences have positive effects on students' writing skills (p. 189). Collaborative writing is essential to leading students to appreciate and enjoy writing as both a process and a product (Boscolo & Gelati, 2019, p. 74). Using QR codes could encourage students to collaborate, sharing skills and ideas while working together on a single piece of writing!
