ABOUT SHADOW PUPPET EDU
Shadow Puppet Edu is a free app that allows students as young as five to create and share videos in the classroom. Students can make videos to create and tell stories, share their ideas, and explain what they are learning. Videos can be added to Seesaw to share within the school community. This video explains the features of Shadow Puppet Edu.
Students can use Shadow Puppet Edu to present essays that they have written, making them more personal and engaging. Giving students authentic writing tasks involving communication is one of the best ways to more fully involve students in writing (Rodesiler & Kelley, 2017, as cited in Boscolo & Gelati, 2019, p. 56).
Students can write and test hypothesis. Shadow Puppet Edu allows them to document the process of their experiments and share their results. Strategies such as the Science-Writing Heuristic (SWH), require students to design investigations, make observations, and gather evidence to support their claims while writing and reflecting on each step. Shadow Puppet Edu can be used to document the steps of SWH and similar strategies (Hand et al., 2004, as cited in Klein, Haug, & Bildfell, 2019, p. 175).
Using Shadow Puppet Edu students can narrate and share stories they have written to receive peer feedback before sharing their finished piece. According to Friedrich (2019), when students collaborate on writing projects, the quality of writing improves (p. 36).
EDUCATOR FRIENDLY:
Shadow Puppet Edu provides teachers with ideas for using app to enhance classroom learning across the curriculum and allows teachers to share their ideas with others. Lessons are linked to Common Core Standards (See Figures 1-10).
According to the text, Best Practices in Writing Instruction, educators must incorporate skills for selecting images, sounds, and videos into writing instruction in order for students to be prepared for today's world (Jewitt, 2014, as cited in Karchmer-Klein, 2019, p. 189). Shadow Puppet Edu can be utilized in the classroom to incorporate these technology skills into writing instruction. This video demonstrates how Shadow Puppet Edu allows students to choose different modes to incorporate into their work.
