Story Wars is a collaborative writing online platform, where you can read, write, and expand on thousands of stories. These can be already created story ideas, or you can even create your own! Connect with other writers and get feedback on your own writings. Story Wars is a great way to improve and strengthen your writing while still having fun.
By using Story Wars, students can collaborate ideas to create their own story. When the teacher creates a class and invites the students, they can create a story just for the class to work on. Each student can create a chapter to the story to form a whole collaborative story.
Story Wars posts each draft of story chapters after students write them. This is a great opportunity to have other students read their peers' work and give them feedback. Chapters can then be revised to take feedback into account.
Story Wars motivates students to write by providing a way to publish their stories to the world. Also, when on the main page students can write a draft chapter to an already made story. If their draft gets the most votes by others who use this platform, their draft becomes the official chapter in the published story.
Teachers have observed that students' motivation to write well increases when they have an chance to revise their work based on peer feedback of online publications (Lapp, Shea, & Wolsey, 2010, As Cited In Karchmer-Klein, 2019, p. 188).
The What Works Clearinghouse's Elementary Practice Guide for writing states that for a collaborative writing community there should be two kinds of joint work: collaborating as writers and giving and receiving peer feedback (Graham et al., 2012, As Cited in Friedrich, 2019, p. 37).
