(Storyjumper, 2019)Students can use Storyjumper to create narrative texts. Students can demonstrate their understanding of story elements as they create a fiction text. When students write narratives they develop a unique knowledge called horizons of possibility thinking. The goal is to discover, imagine, gain perspective, ponder, and develop deep understanding (Langer, 2011, as cited in Olsen & Godfrey, 2019, p.82)
Students can use Storyjumper to create a journal, whether personal to student experiences, or having the student take on the life of another person or animal. journal writing facilitates a deeper understanding of the material and said to improve student outcomes (Bangert, Drowns et al., 2004, as cited in, Klein, Haug, Bildfess, 2019,p.164
StoryJumper can be used across content areas. You can have students work collaboratively or independently to create a book about a topic you are learning about in reading, science, or social studies. The students can research a topic and create their own story. Teachers that have students write from informational sources facilitate content learning, improve reading comprehension, develop critical thinking skills, and to teach writing skills (Herbert, 2019, p.109).
Students can use their prior experiences to create narrative writing. Storytelling stresses emotion and authenticity. Students demonstrate understanding as they make connections to academic content through storytelling (Lisenbee & Ford, 2018, p. 135) .
Storyjumper is a great way to keep students engaged because it gives students an active creator role instead of passive receivers. According to Liu, Tai, & Lui (2018), "In depth learning occurs when students are engaged in synthesizing information into coherent verbal and imagery representations based on their own understanding (p.914)
There is endless possibilities when students create their own stories. Students can decide the genre, develop the story elements, add dialogue, and add rich sensory details. According to Ohler (2013), "Digital storytelling brings out the practical artist in students while helping them practice creativity as a skill that is marketable, personally rewarding, and good for the communities in which they live" (p.15).
