The Summer Coastal Research Experience (SCoRE) is a program designed to give undergraduates experience in research. As part of the program, students apply to various Chemistry labs, and after an intensive interview process may be invited to work as a full-time researcher at the lab, as well as participating in seminars such as "How to select reputable sources" and other research-related topics. Students are also able to present their research at several large conferences.
As part of SCoRE, I worked under Dr. Bryan Wakefield with a small undergraduate team of 5 students including myself. As part of this team, we researched the synthesis of Phidianidine Analogues as neuroprotective agents.
As part of this lab, I got some experience in research, as well as networking with other undergraduate students. I also got to present my research at the SC INBRE conference, as well as the SERMACS conference held in Augusta, Georgia. I was also able to visit the Medical University of South Carolina, where I was able to network with students, staff and faculty and learn about emerging medical technology.
I personally found MUSC the most interesting, as I was able to learn about the mechanical aspects behind these new technologies as well as the processes behind designing and implementing them.
