XU WENWU

ABOUT

Husband to Ying Li, and father to Xu Shang-Chi and Xu Xialing. As well as leader of The Ten Rings Organization and holder of the Ten Rings.

Upon discovering mystical rings of power, the Ten Rings, Wenwu spent thousands of years waging war and gaining as much power as possible. When his reach spread across the world, he still longed for more. So began searching for the ancient city of Ta Lo. However, he could not get past its gatekeeper, Ying Li. Eventually, the two fell in love and he left behind his empire, power, and the rings to be with her. They ended up having two children together, a boy and a girl, before her intimely death. All thanks to his past and those that wished to harm him for his transgressions. Determined to avenge her death and destroy those that killed her, he went on a rampage and started training his son, Shang-Chi, to fight. He wanted to make his son untouchable. As well as able to kill anyone. All the while his daughter, Xialing, trained in secret. When Shang-Chi was 14, Wenwu sent him after the man responsible for his wife's death.

Shang-Chi did not return home until Wenwu dragged him and Xialing back ten years later. He wanted them to help bring their mother back to them. To make their family whole again. For he believed that she was trapped behind a gate in Ta Lo. When in reality, it was the Dweller-in-Darkness that was tricking Wenwu into releasing it. Upon releasing the creature, he realized the grave mistake he had made. In an attempt to protect Shang-Chi, he sacrificed himself. Passing along the Ten Rings to his son before the Dweller drained his soul and killed him.

CANON DIVERGENCIES

• title. After the battle of Ta Lo, and with the Dweller-in-Darkness and its Soul Eaters defeated, the strongest of the eaten souls returned to their bodies. Wenwu being one of them. Sticking by his decision to pass along the Ten Rings to Shang-Chi, he handed over his organization to Xialing. For the most part, he's trying to live in peace in Ta Lo. Though, he will occassionally travel from the village when he gets restless. He has given up all hope of revenge and reuniting with his wife. Instead, he is trying to move forward like he should have done from the beginning.
