Eddie was always an asthmatic kid with nurmerous other health issues. Most of them brought on or constructed by his mother. With her constantly smothering and babying him, it's a surprise he even had friends to begin with.

So, of course he was scared when The Losers Club came in contact with Pennywise. He absolutely did not want to face It, but they didn't have much of a choice when It had taken Bev and threatened his friends. There especially wasn't a choice when It came back twenty-seven years and was attacking them directly. Still, he was scared out of his wits. Letting his anxiety over run him and incapable of doing much to help in the ways of fighting It.

In the end, he managed to wrangle his fear and do what was needed when Richie was in danger. Going directly for Pennywise Itself. Though, not all heroic actions go as planned. At least he got to die in his best friend's arms.
