It's important to understand one of the 'Recommendations' that is being proposed. This is happening at the 2023 National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board Meeting. On today's (Friday 30Jun) afternoon session they presented an interesting - frightening detail.
Wild Horse Advocates should note that they intend to recommend:
Expanding the WHB budget
This means more helicopters, more off range facilities, more horses rounded up.
Watching the WHB budget grow is unconscionable. This could be presented in the 2023 Farm Bill and as tactics go, it's quite good if you want to hide what is happening. The Advisory Board is proposing to recommend that the US Forest Service (USFS) put in a budget request separately from the BLM. This would be new money, but just old programs, attitudes and tactics.
Congress won't see this as a big deal but
It's a request for 20 percent MORE MONEY.
This is an excerpt from the 'closed caption' during the live meeting.
THE BOARD SUPPORTS USFS EFFORTS TO ADVOCATE FOR ITS OWN SEPARATE BUDGET FOR MANAGEMENT OF WILD, FREE ROAMING HORSES AND BURROS GIVEN THAT 20% OF THE TOTAL FREE ROAMING POPULATION IS ON USFS LAND.
THE BOARD RECOMMENDS THE USFS CONTINUE TO ADVOCATE. SO GET RID OF THE WORD EFFORT AND WRITE THE WORD CONTINUE.
>> I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT THE USFS CONTINUE
RIGHT A?
>> YEAH. SORRY.
>> DO WE NEED TO CHANGE, JUST ADD BURROS TO THE STATEMENT ABOVE? BECAUSE IT ALWAYS JUST SAYS HORSES SINCE WE DO IT BELOW.
