Current Challenges

SENSIBLE - NO NEGATIVE POINTS UNTIL EASTER

To earn your SENSIBLE STAR, you must gain no negative points between January and when we break up for Easter. This includes behaviour and curriculum points. This will show how sensible and hard-working you are towards school as well as having a positive attitude towards school and the opportunities it could give you.

THOUGHTFUL – WORLD WOMENS’ DAY COLOURING COMPETITION

To earn your THOUGHTFUL STAR, you must help celebrate World Women’s Day in March by colouring in and elaborately decorating two of the designs Miss Gittins has or two of your own. It must be neat, show effort above and beyond the basic colouring in and celebrate/promote World Women’s Day on the 8th of March and the equality for Women it strives to encourage. It should include a female historical pioneer in any field detailing facts about them and what they are known for. Please see Miss Gittins for the available designs if you do not want to create/find your own designs. Please send your finished designs to Miss Gittins either via email (Gittins.r@walkdenhigh.co.uk) or in the Rising Stars.

AMBITIOUS – Portico Sadie Massey Awards for Young Writers

To earn your AMBITIOUS STAR, you must complete a The Portico Sadie Massey Awards for Young Writers award entry.

Write a historical or contemporary narrative based on a person, place or event in the North of England.

Conditions of Entry:

1. Participants must submit a piece of original narrative based in the North of England

2. The competition is open to students in Key Stage 3, 4 and 5. Winners will be awarded in each

Key Stage.

3. Word count should be between 1,000 and 1,500 words. Judges will only accept a 10% leeway

for entries outside of these word limits.

4. Entries may be set in the past, present or future. Creativity is encouraged.

5. The piece should be set in the North of England and the setting should feature strongly in the

story.

RESPECTFUL - RAISING AWARENESS OF RESPECT IN SCHOOL

To earn your RESPECTFUL STAR, you must create a 500-700 word project on an adult in school or at home that you respect. Respect is important in our society to understand that everyone deserves to be treated well and how their lives can be important inspiration to the rest of us. Respect is about praising talent, qualities, achievements and how they inspire or impress us. Please email completed pieces to miss Gittins at gittins.r@walkdenhigh.co.uk or give them by hand in office behind Rising Stars.

SUPPORTIVE - SUPPORTIVE LGBTQ MONTH/INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY POSTER COMPETITION

To earn your SUPPORTIVE STAR, you must enter the February and March Poster Competition - You must design a poster that we could use to promote either LGBTQ History Month in February or International Women’s Day on 8th March. We should raise awareness of this two important causes and how there should no longer be a stigma associated with LGBTQ, or remembering a historical event and understanding how persecution can cause this to happen. The posters must be received by 2nd March and given/emailed to Miss Gittins - gittins.r@walkdenhigh.co.uk. The best will be chosen and they will earn their stars.

SELF-MOTIVATED - PERSONAL/TEAM CHARITY CHALLENGE

To earn your SELF-MOTIVATED STAR, you must create and achieve a personal or team charity challenge that will raise money for Walkden High School’s charity. It can be elaborate, like a school sleepover, or something much more personal, like a sponsored ‘No Behaviour Points for a Month’ Challenge. This way you can do something good for society and earn yourself some pride with a new stripe for your lapel! You must let Miss Gittins know beforehand so that she can help you plan should you need and advertise that you are completing it.


TEAM-WORKER - FRIDAY QUIZ WINNERS x3 - FORM GROUPS

To earn your TEAM-WORKER STRIPE, you must earn the best score in your year group during the fortnightly Friday Quiz. During the Friday Quiz, you must work together (including your form tutor!) using your knowledge to answer the questions and get the highest score in your year group. Whichever form group wins three times at being the highest scorers in the year group all get Team-worker Stripes.


RESILIENCE - 100% ATTENDANCE/NO BEHAVIOUR POINTS/NO LATES FOR THREE CONSECUTIVE MONTHS

To earn your RESILIENCE STRIPE, You must complete the hardest stripe of all. Resilience must show how you have the courage to carry on despite adversity or challenge - so for this reason your challenge you must complete three months of school with no days off, no behaviour points and no lates. This shows the true courage of the students who try their best to get the most of their education and the Walkden High community.


INITIATIVE - DESIGN A STARS/STRIPE CHALLENGE

To earn your INITIATIVE STRIPE, You must submit a future challenge that I can use for one of the STARS or STRIPES values. It must be a hard challenge, but not impossible. It must take effort but accessible to everyone to do. If your challenge is accepted you will be given the stripe. You must email your potential challenge to Miss Gittins at gittins.r@walkdenhigh.co.uk.


PLANNING AND ORGANISING - HELP WITH AWARENESS EVENTS IN SCHOOL

To earn your PLANNING AND ORGANISING STRIPE, you can volunteer to help out with events that I am running to raise awareness of important issues, you can volunteer two weeks before each event so try to ask me early, just email or see Miss Gittins (gittins.r@walkdenhigh.co.uk) . The events we have coming up are:

  1. 8th March – International Women’s Day
  2. 22nd April – Earth Day
  3. 2-8th May – Global Education Week
  4. 11-17th June – World Water Week


ENTERPRISE – DUKE OF YORK IDEAS AWARD

To earn your ENTERPRISE STRIPE, you must enter and complete your bronze IDEAS Award. Much like the Duke of Edinburgh Award, this award is completed by doing tasks but instead of expeditions, you can do it all from the comfort of home or school. Log onto idea.org.uk, set up a profile and earn points so that you earn the award. You can put it on your CV and even be invited to London to be given your award by the Duke of York. Email Miss Gittins at gittins.r@walkdenhigh.co.uk to ask for help or when you have finished.


SOLUTION-FOCUSED - PHOTOGRAPHY TREASURE HUNT

To earn your SOLUTION-FOCUSED STRIPE, you must complete the Photography Treasure Hunt. You must take the pictures yourself and must include yourself or a part of you in every photo. You can work in a team but this must be said beforehand. In order to fulfil the Treasure Hunt, take a photo of the following things:

  1. Your favourite teacher and you.
  2. A challenging book from the LRC.
  3. Something/a situation in school that shows success.
  4. A display that shows historical importance.
  5. The Atrium from the 3rd floor.
  6. A Prefect.
  7. Something that is green and used everyday.
  8. A completed WIN.
  9. Someone with the initials the same as Mr Lennox (SL) holding a sign with their name on.
  10. Something that represents one of the Stars/Stripes values e.g. Sensible, Thoughtful and why that it represents it.

Email your photos to gittins.r@walkdenhigh.co.uk and you will be let know if you have achieved your stripe.
