Counselors will meet with all freshmen during the Freshmen Seminar which takes place in the fall to discuss transitional issues: academic expectations, clubs and activities, how to access teachers and counselors for help, etc. Students are also introduced to Naviance, a website that will be utilized throughout high school to help students assess with everything from individual learning styles, to career interests and eventually to help in the college application process.
In the spring, counselors will meet with freshmen in a large group to review the course selection process for sophomore year. Individual meetings are held with each student throughout March & April to ensure each student has selected the appropriate schedule for his/her sophomore year.
Each freshman is encouraged to work hard academically, get involved and seek out their counselor at any time to discuss any academic or personal concerns they may have.
Parents, we encourage you to monitor your student’s progress closely throughout the year. If your student is struggling academically or has received a poor interim report in a particular class, we suggest you to contact the teacher directly via phone or email to discuss your concerns. If your student is struggling in multiple areas across the curriculum, contact your student’s counselor to set up a meeting.
Other things to consider:
Attend Meet the Teachers Night, an evening program in September where you follow your student’s schedule, meet his/her teachers, and are provided with course expectations.
Encourage involvement in sports, clubs, activities as these are great opportunities for students to meet new people, share their talents and be engaged in life at WHS. There is an activities fair held early Fall semester for students to learn about and sign-up for extracurricular activities.
Be familiar with the school calendar (found on the high school website) so you know when quarterly interim reports and report cards are released, when events and other activities are taking place. The Daily Announcements are another good source of information which can be found on the high school's homepage.
