Your baker and cake are the last reception vendors you will choose and for good reason. Much like your florist and flowers, you cakes’ style will depend greatly on everything else around it. Everything from the style of your dress to the types of flowers you’ve chosen to the colors of your palette and your catering menu will affect your cake related decisions.
There are some definite things to keep in mind when considering a baker and bakery. First is the taste of your cake. You’ll want to do tastings of different combinations of cakes. Talk to your bakery and see what options they have for this. Some do individual tastings and others do group tastings. You’ll want to know when these options are next available!
Next, you’ll want to talk to them about different decoration options and the pricing that goes with them. Cakes are priced by the slice while cupcakes, a recent favorite amongst couples, are priced by individual cupcake. Fondant icing is more expensive than buttercream, and decorations will drive your price up! Bear in mind, however, that weather can affect your frosting and decor options. Fondant, for example, doesn’t require refrigeration while buttercream and whipped icings do and will melt in the heat! Spend time going over all the options and discussing what will be best for your wedding and time of year. Don’t be afraid to involve your florist or have your cake topped with flowers! Collaboration is key when it comes to your wedding!
Do you want a groom’s cake? This traditionally Southern tradition is making the rounds all across the country and it’s definitely something of a hit. Discuss whether you think this is a good option and something you’ll both enjoy having as a part of your wedding. Remember, the cost of a groom’s cake has to come out of the whole cake budget! So while this can certainly be a fun thing to do and an excellent way to let your guests in on a bit of the groom’s personality, you’ll have to weigh the costs of the cake against your budget!
