Land Overview
With Primeval Whirl taking its final leave from Animal Kingdom, there is a large vacant space in Dinoland U.S.A. Desiring to keep the Dinosaur attraction in-tact (along with the remaining locations in the land) but broaden the land’s scope to include other prehistoric animals, Imagineers have renamed the land “Primeval World.” All of the roadside decorations from Hester and Chester’s Dino-rama have been removed except for the giant brontosaurus.
The new addition is a family dark ride called “Journey Through the Primeval World.” In keeping with other attractions in Animal Kingdom, a large emphasis is on education (while at the same time entertaining the guests). Some of the prehistoric animals are well-known. Others are not so popular as of yet. But each creature in its own way will capture the imagination of guests.
Queue/Ride Building
Between Triceratops Spin and the entrance to Journey Through the Primeval World, there are some tree and rock features that makes the transition a little more gradual. There are static animals (a mammoth and a saber-toothed tiger) available at the entrance of the queue for photo ops. With a glass window front at the base of a volcano, the ride building is a warmer and more inviting show building than the one used for Dinosaur. In big letters are the words “Primeval World Visitor Center." In the queue, guests see scientific posters that detail many of the primeval animals and how scientists have reintroduced the animals to our modern times through this research park. Guests also see a few laboratories, similar to what is found in Avatar’s Flight of Passage. Prehistoric-sounding music plays in the background.
Pre-Show
The quick video explains that biologists discovered that they could bring extinct species back to life by re-introducing their DNA into similar modern species. The scientific community desired to bring back some of the prehistoric species but didn’t want them to be released everywhere. So they designed Primeval World as the one place where the animals would get to live and where scientists could research them.
The next part of the video explains how they will get to see the animals--by loading a Primeval World vehicle and traveling through the park trails to get to the animal exhibits. The regular safety announcements are made at this time.
Ride
Primeval World Exploration uses a track system. After guests load their Primeval World vehicles and their lap bars are in-place, the vehicles are dispatched. The recording mentions that they will be able to see many of the great prehistoric creatures within a safe view from the vehicles. It is the closest thing that they can get to traveling back in time! The first stop is the Prairie.
In the Prairie area, guests see the following animal types as audio-animatronics: Megalania (large lizard), Procoptodon (giant kangaroo), Propalaeotherium (small horse), and Titanoboa (large snake). In particular, the Titanoboa stares at the vehicle, but guests are reminded by the recording that there is a wall that is used as a “barrier” between them and the snake.
Guests now come to the “Forest” area. The first animals they notice are large, slow-moving primates that are Megatheriums (giant sloths). Next guests hear buzzing and see above their vehicles Giant Dragonflies. The final animal that they see is the Terror Bird, which they learn can’t fly.
The next area is the “Large Mammals'' section. First guests see the following non-predator animal types: Glyptodon (giant armadillo), Mastodon (early elephant), Uintatherium (large herbivore), and Woolly Mammoth. In caged areas, guests see the following predator animal types: Andrewsarchus (large furry hippo), Coelodonta (woolly rhino), Entelodon (pig-like rhino), Hyaenodon (giant hyena), Mesonyx (early wolf), Paraceratherium (hornless rhino), and Saber-Toothed Tiger.
The vehicles come to the final animal viewing area—“Underwater Animals.” The vehicles go down a ramp and appear to be under a tank of “water,” mimicking the feel of the real world ride at The Living Seas. The “water effect” is done similar to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea at Tokyo DisneySea with blue lighting (although the bubble effects are in the glass of the tank). Guests see the following animal types: Basilosaurus (early whale), Brygmophyseter (early sperm whale), Megalodon (giant shark). Some Castoroides (beaver) animals are seen at and above the water.
As guests leave “Underwater,” they see the loading area where their exploration began. They hear the words, “We hope you enjoyed your expedition. Come and see us and our primeval creatures again! Please wait til your vehicle comes to a complete stop. Make sure you collect any personal items before leaving your vehicle and heading to the exit.”
Exit
After debarking from the Primeval World vehicles, guests exit to a gift shop. There they can buy merchandise such as apparel and stuffed animals that will remind them of their visit to Primeval World.
