Inspired by Stew-Mel's Owen Martin-Jones and the Mayankho organisation, we established a fifth workstream in 2025 with a focus on nurturing young entrepreneurs.
Our goal is to help people establish their own independent, sustainable business so that they can support their families and help their community.
We're helping 12 young women in Mulanje establish a chicken business to feed their families and provide some income. With a small contribution from us, they have bought 100 broilers and 100 egg layers. (2025)
In 2023, we gave a small contribution to some porters to build a pig shed and two pigs. The plan is to switch from selling wooden souvenirs to pork burgers at the local curio stands in Mulanje.
Mayankho was set up in 2021 by ex-ESMC pupil, Owen Martin-Jones, to help women secure their financial independence and feed their families. They offer business advice and educational workshops and support a number of successful businesses, including honey production.
