Learning management tools provide organizational tools and functions to support remote, hybrid, and in-person learning, serving as a 'landing page' for students and providing access to curated resources, assignments, and discussions.

Learning management tools can support both synchronous and asynchronous learning including

  • Teacher-led direct instruction

  • Classroom discussions

  • Individual student support

  • Access to class schedules, grades, and calendars

  • Curated lessons, resources and support for student learning

What are students doing?

  • Accessing and using learning resources and assignments provided by the educator

  • Participating in interactive instruction

  • Interacting with other students in small groups, with a partner, and in large group settings

What are educators doing?

  • Designing and curating access to content and lessons to meet instructional objectives

  • Facilitating discussions (small groups, partners, and large groups)

  • Engaging with students through responses, grading, or direct messaging

  • Monitoring student progress through instructional calendars, assessments, and activities

What digital resources do educators need to conduct virtual classrooms?

Most learning management tools are purchased and deployed at the system level, adopted and implemented across multiple classrooms or schools. Learning management tools require devices with wireless access and, in most cases, user accounts established for both students and educators.

For some types of functionality, a microphone and camera may be required.
