Choice Boards

Choice boards are flexible tools that can be used to explore any topic, theme, or unit and that allow all students different paths to the learning objective. Choice boards differentiate learning by providing a menu of learning activities. These are most effective in asynchronous learning environments.

Choice Boards can be used as centers or learning stations, introductions to a unit or a way to review core content. Choice Boards also can be used as self-contained, independent learning units with links to self-paced student activities that include assessments. For teacher librarians and other specialists, Choice Boards can be a collaborative platform for crafting activities that utilize various resources and skills related to information literacy, research and recreational reading.

Teachers curate and create a range of activities for students to choose from. This may include linking videos, worksheets, readings, or directions for a range of choices, Teachers can create content from scratch, link the Choice Board to current curriculum, or use web based content.

What digital resources do educators need to create a choice board?

Choice Boards can be made using simple word processing or slide programs. However, teachers will need to be able to connect to web-based or LMS based content using the Internet. Activities for students may be stored in an LMS, Google Drive or other cloud-based storage that allows for sharing with students. Or, the Choice Board may give directions for offline activities that do not require any additional online information. Teachers can create printable Choice Boards that are fully offline depending on student and teacher need.
