“Self-reflection entails asking yourself questions about your values, assessing your strengths and failures, thinking about your perceptions and interactions with others, and imagining where you want to take your life in the future." – Robert L. Rosen
As a teacher candidate, Lakehead University provided us with the opportunity to participate in several professional development seminars. One particular seminar was about mindfulness. As an educator, it is important to focus on both the students and our own well-being. Mindfulness is a tool that can be used to help deal with a persons emotions when they feel overwhelmed. During the seminar one particular activity resonated with me.
Activity: Share a thought that instantly brings a smile to your face.
It is important to always keep in mind the different factors that make you happy. These factors may include friends, family, children, partner, pets or hobbies. Always take a moment throughout the day to notice what makes you smile.

Orange Shirt Day is an event in which everyone wears orange shirts to support the Indigenous community. This day was created to help educate non-Indigenous Canadians about the "Indian residential school system and the impact it has had on Indigenous communities for over a century". It is important to promote this awareness and reflect on Canada's past.

Classroom management is an vital factor needed in order to comprehend that emotions can have a significant impact on a child's development. The main branches that I focus on in the mind map above are the 5 developmental domains, self-regulation, decision making, mindfulness, student centered, teacher centered, positive stress and negative stress. It is important to keep in mind that children are different and deal with situations differently. Stress not only influences the students but also the educators.
Teaching in the Tongrass
There are several ways that I would use executive strategies while teaching. I would use trial and error at the beginning of the lesson to observe which executive strategy works best for the children in my class. Not all strategies will work.
For instance, I would create a child friendly acronym example to engage the child's interest with the material. If I notice during conversations or tests that the children use acronyms, I would continue to use acronyms throughout my lessons. In addition, I would teach the students how to create their own.
If acronyms are not an effective strategy, then I would incorporate different executive strategies such as rehearsal, creating images or phrases, writing information down or using different audio methods (Edmunds & Edmunds, 2015). Ultimately, the best way to see what executive strategies work best for the students would be to ask them directly.
Backwards design is a helpful strategy that assists teachers to critically analyze and plan their lessons. When planning their lesson, the teacher starts with the end goal and works backwards. For instance, if the teacher wants the students to learn about mixing colours, they would plan activities that would lead the students to that end goal.
The four main factors that teachers need to consider when backwards planning are, “what do I want my students to learn, how will I determine whether or not they have learned, what will I teach and how will I teach” (Edmunds & Edmunds, 2015, p.118). When an educator uses these questions to create their lesson plans it would allow them to think about what the students will be learning, what assessments will be used to evaluate the students and what techniques they are going to use to teach the material.

As mentioned in Educational Psychology: Applications in Canadian Classroom (2015), it is important to express non-negotiable rules while also giving children the opportunity to create their own rules. I believe that non-negotiable rules are beneficial for students in order for them to feel a sense of belonging and inclusiveness. My classroom will be a welcoming environment for all. It is important for students and their teacher to have a positive relationship.
