When reading the storybook, Standing on My Own Two Feet: A Child's Affirmation of Love in the Midst of Divorce by Tamara Schmitz, the read-aloud strategy used was a think-aloud and questioning strategy. This included predictions and asking questions. After reading the story, the students and I will have open-ended discussions about divorce. The children will have the opportunity to further their knowledge on this complex topic.

Before reading the book I will ask the students, "When looking at the cover of the book, what do you think the story is about?". There is a page in the book when Pigeon says, "You haven't heard the Yaaaawn last of me". I will ask the students, "How do we know that the Pigeon is getting tired?". Prior to flipping to the last page, I will ask the question, "What do you think happens next?".

There are a few words on each page and it is the illustrated images that tell the story. The students use their imagination to predict how the story will progress. When reading the book, I will point to objects and ask the students to state what the object is. For instance, I will point to the curtain and say, "Behind the dark was a _______".

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is a good resource book to read with students. Students can be taught lessons about family, giving to others, being thankful, happiness and love. An activity for the students would be to create their own giving tree. This will allow them to self-reflect on giving to others. It is important to teach students to be kind and thankful towards others.
