In this experiment I used Romano Bean. I counted 20 beans and soaked them in a container for 24 hours
I placed a square piece of aluminum foil in a shallow tray.
I took a piece of paper towel and created a 3 X 3 grid. Each box was labeled with numbers from 1 through 9. It was then placed on top of the aluminum foil.
I took the bean out of the of the container and placed between 2-3 beans in each square.
After placing the beans in the squares, they were covered with another piece of paper towel. I took a water bottle filled with room temperature water and then sprayed the paper towel to ensure that it was moist but not drenched.
The beans were frequently watered. After a couple of days, the beans began to sprout. This is noted in squares 3 and 5.
A few more days passed and I observed that more beans began to open and sprout.
After 7 days, the beans stopped sprouting and dried up.
I will conduct the bean experiment for a second time and will use Kidney beans instead of Romano beans.
This experiment was not successful. I believe it was due to the lack of water the beans received throughout the day.
I followed the steps from the first experiment.
I made some modifications to the bean containers. I wanted to compare if the type of container used would impact the beans growth. I used a glass mason jar and a plastic food storage container.
First, I lined the mason jar with paper towel.
I then crumpled an additional piece of paper towel and placed it at the bottle of the jar.
10 beans were placed in the jar. The beans were constantly sprayed throughout the day to ensure they were hydrated.
First, I placed a piece of paper towel on the bottom of a food container.
5 cotton pads were placed on top of the paper towel.
10 beans were placed in the container. The beans were constantly sprayed throughout the day to ensure they were hydrated.
The beans in the food container started to sprout after a couple of days.
The beans in the mason jar also started to sprout after a couple of days.
When conducting this experiment in the future, I will definitely place the beans in a clear plastic container to spout.
Once the beans have sprouted, I will place them in a different container which will provide more space for them to grow upwards instead of being scrunched together.
Compared to the first bean experiment the beans were hydrated and did not dry out. The Kidney beans sprouted better than the Romano beans.
Placing the beans in a clear plastic cup will allow the students to better observe the beans and document their growth.
A possible extension to this experiment would be to have the students measure their bean stocks.

The following video is an example of a turbine experiment.
Note: The students can use paper clips instead of weights.
This experiment is a great way to help students learn about energy and the different sources of energy.
The conversation can lead to the concept of renewable and nonrenewable energy while discussing the social, economic, political and environmental impacts energy has.
If the students are not old enough to safely use the material, as the educator I would manipulate the objects while the students verbally instruct me on how to create the turbine.
After viewing the Tumblebook Library in the Education Library website, I stumbled across a children’s storybook called Lewis Cardinal’s First Winter by Amy Crane Johnson. This storybook introduces habitats and communities to students. The story is about a red cardinal named Lewis who flies around the forest to gain a better understanding of what his animal friends are doing to prepare for winter. Lewis is trying to see if there is anything specific that he is supposed to prepare for. The author explains the terminology of hibernation and migration while providing examples of Lewis’ animal friends. The target audience for this storybook are for students from kindergarten to grade three.
This storybook is a beneficial resource tool for educators to use as a “minds-on” activity for a lesson regarding habitats and communities. In the grade one science curriculum, it is noted that students will learn about daily and seasonal changes. A specific expectation is on how seasonal changes impact the environment and living things (Ontario Ministry of Education, 2007). By the end of grade one the students will better understand the terms hibernation and migration. They will be introduced to the idea that as winter approaches, it will be more difficult for animals to find food while surviving in cold temperatures.

Whether it is the original or the new Netflix reanimated The Magic School Bus television series, the content in each episode is very educational and covers a variety of scientific topics. Throughout each episode, the teacher Ms. Frizzle takes her class on field trips which allows her students to have in-depth experiences of the world around them.

Video: How To Fold A Paper Airplane That Flies Far
1 Piece of Paper
1 Paper Clip
Step Two: Throw the paper airplane and observe how far it lands. Place a marker to identify where the airplane landed.
Step Three: Take a paper clip and clip it on the long thin fold on the underside of the Dart. Clip it starting at the back and then moving it forward.
Note: I started at the back of the airplane. It was noted that that the second airplane (with the paper clips) flew 4.3 feet farther than the first airplane.
Step Four: I then moved the paper clip to the middle of the airplane and it landed in the closet door.
Step Five: Finally, I moved the paper clip to the far left side of the paper airplane and it landed close to the spot where the original airplane landed.
Note: The marker states it was the third attempt but it was actually the fourth attempt.
