"On Thin Lines"

Once I read about Octavia, I knew I had to pick it. The prominence of spiderwebs in its worldbuilding really appealed to me, and I just plain love anything that use them. As a result, I tried to have the nets really be the focus of the piece. I also wanted to give it a simplistic but still vaguely spooky look, hence the color palette of green, black and grey.

Inspiration - Hanging Bridge over Mountains

Textures Used

I went ahead and chose to base my project off the city of Octavia since I was intrigued by its worldbuilding being heavily centered around spiderwebs. Part of my inspiration for this project came from simply thinking about bridges hanging over mountains, both for their loftiness as well as the sinking feeling one gets while crossing that they could dismantle at any point. Thus, my intention was to craft a giant webbed net connecting the two mountains where some houses and other buildings would hang below shrouded in spiderwebs, as if in some kind of sac. I also originally wanted to construct some hammocks as they were described in the original story. However, due to my limited experience with 3D modeling, I decided to heavily modify the piece into a sort of prototype, focusing on crafting the net. Instead of having the houses hang in sacs, I modified it so they’re instead held by another set of webs. While I kept the modeling simplistic, I went ahead and custom made all of the textures, using greens, grey, and black for stylistic purposes. Anywhere I didn't use textures were all just solid color. If I were to go back and improve this, while I did purposefully keep it simplified to stay consistent with the modifications, I would render more detail, such as in the mountains and terrain. Besides that, I’d probably add spiderwebs onto the mountains and other parts of the terrain. This would not only further display the intended prominence of the spiderwebs in my worldbuilding, but I believe it would also enhance the spooky appearance I wanted to create. Alongside that, I would probably also enhance this spooky appearance by for instance adding detail to the houses.
