Abstract:

The purpose of this text is essentially critical but also pedagogical: that is, it aims to provide and discuss some sociological reflections on the contemporary city, within the academy or elsewhere in civil society, so that it may inspire debates on the urban fabric, its structures, institutions and practices of its agents. Sometimes the urban aspects that we judge to be insignificant or even infamous, reveal themselves as those that seem to be the most intimate and familiar to their inhabitants. Therefore, they are true indicators of the social changes and transformations that inevitably pervade our daily life, both in the case of the perception of the city by the citizen, and at the momentum of the interpretation of urban regularities and irregularities, by the social scientist or by the terrain philosopher. This is the case of leisure places and practices, that equally manifest themselves as loci and practices of knowledge, and essentially as actions of urban knowledge that establish and institute democratic citizenship. One of these landscapes and urban activities is the pub and its public drinking.

Resumo:

O objetivo deste texto é essencialmente crítico, mas também pedagógico: ou seja, pretende-se facultar e discutir algumas reflexões sociológicas sobre a cidade contemporânea, na academia ou nos outros lugares da sociedade civil, por forma a inspirar, por pouco que seja, debates sobre o tecido urbano, as suas estruturas, instituições e práticas dos seus agentes. Por vezes, os aspetos urbanos que julgamos serem mais ínfimos ou mesmo infames, desvelam-se como aqueles que se afiguram enquanto mais íntimos e familiares aos seus habitantes. Assim sendo, constituem verdadeiros indicadores das mudanças e transformações sociais que, inevitavelmente, perpassam na nossa vida diária, tanto no caso da perceção da cidade pelo cidadão, quanto no momentum da interpretação das regularidades e irregularidades urbanas, por parte do cientista social ou do filósofo de terreno. É o caso dos lugares e práticas de lazer que, igualmente, manifestam-se enquanto loci e práticas de saber, e essencialmente como ações de conhecimento urbano que instauram e instituem a cidadania democrática. Uma dessas paisagens e atividades urbanas é a taberna e o seu beber em público.
