Sign-Up was due by Friday, December 22 - the deadline to register has passed, but we have not officially completed paperwork. If you have events (solos/ensembles) you forgot to register, email Mr. Eggen (eggen.dominick@brevardschools.org). If you need to cancel event at NO COST, do so by emailing Mr. Eggen before Monday, January 8. After we have paid for registration, those who do not participate for ANY REASON will be for the cost of their event(s) (see below). 

The Solo & Ensemble Music Performance Assessment exists to offer opportunities for individual and small groups of students to get critique and feedback through solo & small ensemble performance. Solos (that often require piano accompaniment), duets, trios, quartets, quintets... you get the picture.

• An individual student may be entered in UP TO A TOTAL OF FOUR S&E events of different instrumentation

  • • Example: John Doe may perform: a solo on horn, in a duet on horn, in a trio on horn, and in a quartet on horn

    • Example: John Doe may NOT perform two solos on horn and in two brass quintets on horn

COST: Students who choose to participate will pay:

FBA Exceptions and Directions:

• Piccolo: Piccolos may select music from the flute list. Keep in mind the selection will also be evaluated on its suitability.*

• Oboe / English horn: English horns may substitute any double reed solo from the list.*

• Oboe Trios may play from the Flute Trio List with alterations to range permissible. Change the category to Woodwind Trio.*

• Bassoon Trios may play off the Trombone Trio List. Change the category to Woodwind Trio.*

• Eb Clarinet: Eb Soprano Clarinet may play suitable music from the Bb Clarinet list.*

• Bass Clarinet may play from the Bb Clarinet List. Appropriateness of chosen repertoire should be considered. Change the category to Bass Clarinet Solo.

• Saxophone solos: Soprano Saxophone may play from the Tenor saxophone list.*

• Bass Saxophone may play from the Baritone Saxophone list.

• Baritone saxophone may only play from the Alto Saxophone list with special permission from the S&E Music Committee Chair.

• Mixed Ensembles: Mixed ensembles may use substitute instruments only as included on the original score.

• Trombones: Trombone and Euphonium lists are interchangeable. The interchangeability of Trombone and Euphonium parts applies to Brass Ensembles, as well as the Solo List.*

• Bass Trombone may play from the Tuba List. Appropriateness of chosen repertoire should be considered. Change the category to Trombone Solo.

• Euphoniums: Trombone and Euphonium lists are interchangeable. Change the category in MPA Online to the correct instrument.*

• Treble Clef Baritone may play from the Trumpet List Grades 1-3. Change the category to Euphonium Solo. *

• Mallets: Mallets soloists may play grade 1, 2 & 3 Flute and Oboe Literature.*

Ensembles:

• Instruments bracketed parenthetically indicate optional parts.

• In addition to listed choir music, quartet, quintet, and sextet music may be used to form choirs. There must be at least two(2) players per part.*

• Percussion ensembles may NOT double parts.

• Chamber winds MUST be performed in the exact instrumentation listed - NO DOUBLING, NO SUBSTITUTIONS.

String Bass: A string bass player in a school that does not have an orchestra, may perform a double bass solo at the FBA solo/ensemble MPA. The solo must be on the FOA solo list. The difficulty levels shall be determined as follows:

• • • FOA Class A = FBA Grade 5

    • FOA Class B = FBA Grade 4

    • FOA Class C = FBA Grade 3

    • FOA Class D = FBA Grade 2

    • FOA Class E = FBA Grade 1

Students must play a Grade 5 (class A) to be eligible for State MPA.

Extended Time for Longer Solos: If you have a student who wishes to play a solo that is longer than the allotted time limit after making appropriate cuts as described in the FBA Handbook on page 21-22, you may request an extended time block for their performance:

The request should be made to your district chair. Let them know how much more time the student will need.

District chairs: after you schedule your MPA, you can extend the student's timeslot in MPA Online:

Go to the "Schedule" page

Select the student's Judge from the Judge drop-down

Find the student's entry and click the "+2 min" button. This will push all events after this one 2 minutes later each time you click that button. Repeat for each additional 2 minutes the director has requested.

*When playing music from another category, the director must change the category of the entry in MPA Online. For example, if a Trombone is playing a piece from the Euphonium Solo list, after you enter it in MPA Online it will think it's a Euphonium solo so you must manually change the "Category" to "Trombone Solo."  Or, if you are doubling parts of a quartet, quintet, or sextet to make it a choir, you must change the category of the MPA Online entry to the appropriate type of choir. 

Band Solo & Ensemble will be hosted at Viera High School on Friday, February 11 & Saturday, February 12. The event is OPTIONAL. Solos will cost $10 per solo, and ensembles will cost $5 per member of the group. plus the cost of an accompanist (if required). We accept cash or checks to "VHS."

Solo & Ensemble is an OPTIONAL event offering soloists & small ensembles the opportunity to perform and get feedback from professional string educators.

• Decide NOW – we must pay all fees by Friday, October 6

  • If you sign-up and do not perform, you will still owe the $$$

  • $10 per member of a small ensemble (ex: a duet will cost $20 total)

Student Instructions:

• All students should report to Rockledge High School ~30 minutes before their assigned time.  You are responsible for your own transportation to Rockledge.  Plan in advance for traffic and weather. 

• You DO NOT need to check-in when you arrive.

• Don’t forget your bow, instrument, rock stop, and two original copies of your music, plus an original piano part (if your pianist doesn’t have the music already). 

• A warm-up room is provided.  Tune yourself in the warm-up room before you perform

• You may only play in the warm-up room or in your assigned performance room at your assigned time.  Do not play in the hallways or common areas.

• Performance times and room numbers are listed on the other sheet.

• Please consider supporting your peers by watching their performances.

• DRESS PROFESSIONALLY – no hats, jeans, t-shirts, or gum.

• NUMBER ALL OF YOUR MEASURES – YOUR COPY, JUDGES COPY(IES), AND PIANO MUSIC

• Once in the room at your performance time, you may tune yourself to the piano in the room and play just a few notes to get used to the sound in the room.

• Introduce yourself to the judge prior to your performance, just after you hand the music to the judge, or when the judge says “Ready?” or “OK, Begin” – for example, “My name is Joshua Bell.  I am a junior from Viera High School.  I will be performing Concerto in A minor by Vivaldi.  My accompanist is Mrs. Warner.”

• BE SURE YOU AND THE JUDGE HAVE THE ORIGINAL MUSIC – NO COPIES.  It is your responsibility to get originals from the directors in advance. You must have two ORIGINAL sets!

• You are free to leave after your performance.  Ratings will post to a website that you can access at a later time.

• The directors will have your sheets ready for you at school the following week.

• Superior Medals will be given to you at the Instrumental Music Banquet in May.

• Performances are free and open to the public – parents are invited!

• Please do not panic if Mr. Eggen, Mrs. Dix, or Mr. Morgan watch your performance.  Also, please do not be offended if they do not watch your performance.

On Friday, February 10 and Saturday, February 11, Viera HS will host the FBA Solo & Ensemble MPA. This event allows students to perform solos and small ensemble chamber literature for evaluation for trained adjudicators. This includes auxiliary (color guard), percussion, brass, and woodwinds. 

The above links are for students to register their various events. Here are a few basic rules:
- Students may participate in up to four (4) different performances
- A student may perform only one (1) solo on an instrument.
- This means a flutist can perform both a flute solo and a piccolo solo, but NOT 2 solos on flute.

Welcome to the District 10 Solo & Ensemble Music Performance Assessment hosted by Viera High School!

Please do not contact the VHS band directors with questions regarding your performance time, accompanist, music, or any other matter. Please contact your own band director with such questions.

VHS DOES NOT HAVE A COPY MACHINE AVAILABLE FOR USE DURING THE FESTIVAL. Your judge needs the original piece of music! This could include music purchased & printed from an online source, but you may need to show proof of purchase.

There will be NO CONCESSIONS. A few vending machines are available on campus with energy drinks & water. 

Please note: because the festival does not start until 5:00pm , it is recommended that you do not arrive on campus prior to 3:45pm. No guests will be permitted on campus before 3:30pm, and the parking lot is very difficult to enter between 2:15pm and 2:45pm. (see maps).

You need to know the name of your judge in order to find your performance room on the VHS Campus. YOUR BAND DIRECTOR WILL HAVE THIS INFORMATION. An information table will be available as well.
