The performance will take place in the Scheidt Performing Arts Center: https://www.memphis.edu/scheidtcenter/ - 3800 Central Ave, Memphis, TN 38117.

Notable details: 

• Trip cost is $600 per student (cash or checks to "VHS")

  • • the 1st payment of $150 will be due on Monday, January 22

    • the 2nd payment of $150 is due on Monday, February 5

    • the 3rd payment of $150 is due on Monday, February 17

    • the 4th payment of $150 is due on Monday, February 22

• Some students have earned credit from fundraising efforts - see Mr. Eggen to confirm your balance

• Departure will be on Wednesday, February 28 around 4:00am

• Our Performance is on Friday, March 1 at 2:00pm at the University of Memphis

• We return late on Saturday, March 2

After consulting with the Viera HS Clinic, here is the updated/correct medication policy for the Tampa Trip:

• Medication for Headaches (i.e., Tylenol, Ibuprofren, Motrin, etc) may be held by student and self-administered without need for permission

• ALL OTHER MEDICATION must be turned in to the Viera HS Clinic by Tuesday, February 27 - it will then be catalogued and organized.

  • • Mr. Eggen & Ms. Dix will collect the medications on bring them on the trip, administering them to students as needed.

Wind Ensemble 

2024 FMEA Professional Development Conference

2024 CBDNA/NBA Southern Division Conference

In May of 2023, the directors submitted applications for the Viera High School Wind Ensemble to be considered for opportunities to perform at various conferences, one held in Florida and another in Tennessee. These applications required submitting recordings that would be used to hold “blind” auditions, meaning the chosen ensembles would be selected by independent judges who had no knowledge of who they were listening to. 

The result is that the VHS Wind Ensemble has been chosen to perform at two different events, both occurring in the 2024 Spring semester:

Thursday, January 11, 2024 - Florida Music Education Association Professional Development Conference: This is the yearly music education conference held in Tampa, Florida, which is where the All-State Ensembles meet and perform. Viera’s performance will likely be early in the morning on 1/11/2024, taking place at the Tampa Convention Center in Downtown Tampa.

Thursday, February 29-Saturday, March 2, 2024 - College Band Directors National Association/National Band Association Southern Division Conference: CBDNA & NBA are national organizations who hold conferences in geographical areas. The Southern Conference will be held at the University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee. Our exact performance time will be announced later.

These trips will entail a significant financial investment from students and their families in order to cover the costs of transportation, lodging, food, and sightseeing opportunities. However, we believe the payoff of having the chance to perform for these audiences, as well as visit the University of Memphis, will be well worth the expense for our Wind Ensemble.

Exact details are being determined each day, but for now we can tell you the following:

• We will be staying overnight on both trips

  • The FMEA trip (Tampa) is a single overnight in a hotel

  • The CBDNA trip (Memphis) is likely to include three nights in a hotel

• We will travel via charter bus to both conferences

• Meals will likely be handled a few ways:

  • Breakfast will likely be provided as part of the hotel stays

  • Some meals will be scheduled & part of the total cost

  • Some will be on the road and will need to be paid for by each individual

• The cost per student will take some time to determine; we anticipate the total cost for both trips to be under $1200 each at quad occupancy in the hotel rooms. When we have more details we will give everyone info about what to plan on.

• We will set-up a payment schedule in order to help break up the cost of the trip over the next 7 months. A deposit will be required (in late August/early September).

• Various fundraising activities will be planned in order to help those who are in need of financial assistance. We will also reach out to our community for donations and sponsors in order to seek help for those who may not be able to easily meet the financial needs of this trip.

We will need chaperone support in order to manage our co-ed group on an out of state, multiple overnight trip. Chaperones will need to be fingerprinted as a “registered volunteer” so you are allowed to monitor students in an overnight situation. There is a cost to attend the trip as a chaperone, and that will be determined as soon as possible. We will send out info on how to apply to be considered as a chaperone for the trip.

If you know of anyone who would like to make a monetary donation to our program, please help them reach out to us via our contact information, which is below. We will need assistance from parents to organize the different aspects of the trip and we are open to those who wish to reach out as well.

Multiple trips like this will be the first of its kind for the Viera High School Instrumental Music Program and it is our goal to bring the entire Wind Ensemble to Tampa & Memphis. We have a long road ahead of us in regards to planning, fundraising, and musical preparation, but we look forward to the challenge and opportunity. Parents/Guardians who are interested in being considered for a chaperone spot on our trip to Memphis should email eggen.dominick@brevardschools.org to express their interest. Please consider the following:

• The trip requires you to travel with the band by charter bus to Memphis on Wednesday, February 28 through Saturday, March 2

• The total cost for a chaperone is $600 for double-occupancy in the hotel (cash or check to "VHS")

• A limited number of spots will be available based on available room on the charter bus and hotel availability

  • • We are travelling with students and chaperones from the Freedom HS, sharing a bus in order to help save money on charter bus travel

Those who wish to travel to Memphis on their own will need to coordinate their own hotel accommodations and meals. The Viera HS Wind Ensemble will be staying in the Hampton Inn Poplar-Memphis (5320 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN 38119) which is a short drive from the University of Memphis. The final itinerary is not yet set, but here is a general idea:

• Wednesday, February 28 - depart early morning on charter bus

• Wednesday, February 28 - arrive in Memphis in evening

• Thursday, February 29 - watch performances at University of Memphis

  • • Freedom HS performs at 3:45pm

• Thursday, February 29 - eat dinner at Central BBQ Downtown (https://eatcbq.com/pages/downtown)

• Friday, March 1 - Viera performs at 2pm

• Friday, March 1 - dinner at Incredible Pizza Company (https://incrediblepizza.com/locations/memphis/)

• Saturday, March 2 - return trip to Florida
