"Party A" (the Player Characters) is composed of Aggro the Axe (human fighter 4), Abner (human magic-user 5), Arkayn (human cleric of St. Cuthbert 4), and Arlanni (human thief 2). The PCs are hastening down a dungeon corridor to avoid an encounter with a large group of goblins, whose territory they are now exiting after a bit of friction caused by party in the goblin's common room.
The party thief, Arlanni has stated she has a sling bullet readied in her sling as they hustle along the corridor.
Aggro, Arkayn, and Arlanni are in the front rank of a 10 ft. corridor while Abner hustles behind them keeping an eye on the rear. Given the tight quarters, Aggro holds his hand axe and shield, Arkayn holds his shield (with the other hand free) and Arlanni her sling. Abner holds a torch aloft so the group can see and keeps his other hand free.
Party A rounds a corner, not noticing the light from "Party B" in their haste.
"Party B" (a group of evil NPCs) is composed of Gutboy Barrelhouse (dwarf fighter 6), Balto (human monk 1), Blastum (human magic-user 4), and Barjin (half-elf fighter 4, magic-user 5).
These malcontents are parked in the hallway squabbling over the pouches of two dead goblins.
Gutboy, Balto, and Barjin are in front arguing with weapons out and Blastum stands back a bit keeping an eye out but clearly bored with the proceedings. Blastum's lit lantern is at his feet.
It is determined that Party B is surprised for 2 segments and that both front ranks of either party are within melee range of each other when the encounter begins.
Because Balto has a Dexterity reaction modifier of +1, he will only be surprised for 1 segment (unknown to those in Party A).
Party A can Declare Intentions for both surprise segments before the round begins. The group recognizes Party B as a group of "evil marauders" and chooses to attack immediately.
It is important to remember here that it is the combat action that sets when in the round the activity occurs, NOT initiative. Initiative simply breaks a tie if action occurs within the same segment. Given each segment is made of 6 seconds, the lower initiative goes first. Because surprise conditions treat segments with special rules, initiative is given a heighten role during these surprise segments.
Segment 1, Init 1: Arlanni throws two sling bullets at Blastum but both miss.
Segment 1, Init 3: Abner casts magic missile at Gutboy doing 6 points of damage.
Segment 1, Init 4: Aggro hits Balto for 2 hit points of damage with his +1 hand axe.
Segment 1, Init 5: Arkayn casts command at Gutboy demanding that he "surrender". Gutboy makes his save and ignores the command with a laugh.
The DM knows that Balto can now declare actions, although he does not relay that information to the PCs. Balto decides to declare an attack with his staff against Aggro which will happen on segment 5 (normally 4 segments to attack with the staff plus 1 for the surprise segment). His initiative is a 3 (he rolled a 4 on the d6 minus 1 for his Dexterity reaction modifier).
Segment 2, Init 1: Arlanni throws a sling bullet at Blastum but misses again.
Segment 2, Init 3: Abner casts another magic missile spell at Gutboy doing an additional 7 points of damage.
Segment 2, Init 4: Aggro chooses to attack Balto again with his hand axe. However, because Balto is no longer surprised, the standard time is assessed and the DM informs Aggro's player that the attack will occur on segment 5 of the round.
Segment 2, Init 5: Arkayn draws his mace so that he may attack Gutboy later in the round.
At this point, the 2 surprise segments are complete and the two groups (with a couple of exceptions) can Declare Intentions for the remainder of the first round (the remaining 8 segments).
While the actions by the combatants are declared as normal, 2 segments of the round are already gone to surprise segments so the results are shifted upward by two (for example, Barjin with a long sword would normally attack on segment 5 but in this round, it will be segment 7).
Party A. Arlanni declares she will attack Blastum again with her sling (attacking on segment 7, init 1). Abner will retreat to the corner, drop his torch, then fish out his scroll of web before casting it at the largest enemy group (beginning on segment 2, move 2 segments then 6 segments to access a scroll from a tube in a pouch, and then read it—another 2 segments for a completion segment of 2nd segment next round; Init TBD). Aggro will attack Balto on segment 5 (init 4) with his hand axe. Arkayn will attack Gutboy on segment 9 (init 5) with his mace.
Party B. Blastum declares he will cast a 1 segment spell then move into melee range of Aggro, Arkayn, and Arlanni (this takes 1 segment to cast and then 1 segment to move and his initiative is 6). Balto's attack (begun in surprise segment 2) will complete on segment 5 (init 3). Gutboy attacks Arkayn on segment 6 (init 4). Barjin decides the wisest move is to swing his sword at Arkayn on segment 7 (init 2).
Segment 3. Abner moves away. Init 6: Blastum casts shocking grasp.
Segment 4. Abner moves away. Init 6: Blastum enters melee with Aggro, Arkayn, and Arlanni.
Segment 5. Abner drops his torch and retrieves his scroll. Init 3: Balto attacks Aggro with his staff but misses. Because Balto rolled the lower initiative, he attacked before Aggro. Init 4: Aggro attacks Balto with his hand axe, hitting and killing him.
Segment 6. Abner retrieves his scroll. Init 4: Gutboy hits Arkayn with his war hammer for 5 points of damage.
Segment 7. Abner retrieves his scroll. Init 1: Arlanni misses Blastum again with her sling. Init 2: Barjin hits Arkayn with his long sword for 6 points of damage. Arkayn is starting to have second thoughts about this whole affair.
Segment 8. Abner retrieves his scroll.
Segment 9. Abner retrieves his scroll. Init 5: Arkayn misses Gutboy with his footman's mace.
Segment 10. Abner retrieves his scroll.
Party A. Abner will crouch near the torch on the floor to read the web spell from his scroll beginning on segment 1 and completing at the end of segment 2 (init 3). Arlanni will drop her sling and attack Blastum with her short sword on segment 3 (init 1). Aggro will attack Gutboy with his axe on segment 4 (init 3). Arkayn will attack Gutboy with his mace on segment 7 (init 5).
Party B. Blastum attacks (touches) Arlanni on segment 1 (init 3). Gutboy attacks Arkayn with his hammer on segment 4 (init 2). Barjin casts invisibility on segment 2 (init 5) before moving away and sheathing his sword (he intends to attack using his bow later).
Segment 1, Init 3: Blastum touches Arlanni and discharges his shocking grasp spell, dropping the thief.
Segment 2, Init 3: Abner casts the web spell from his scroll, filling the hallway. Only Aggro makes his saving throw avoiding the webs. Barjin's spell is ruined. Gutboy, Barjin, Blastum, and Arkayn are all caught in the webs. The light from the lantern is blocked and the hallway is darkened as only the guttering torch on the floor is providing light.
Once the enemy is held fast in the webs (a long term condition), the combat is effectively over.
