In November of 2025, I had the opportunity to faciliate my first out-of-class TIM lesson with my classmate and coworker Megan Sweeney. We presented Divergent Thinking in the form of the Window of Ideas to our entire Art Department faculty during a day of Professional Development.
We created the slideshow together and I printed out the Divergent Guidelines for our groups. Megan prepared an email infomercial ad to heighten the anticipation. Before the other teachers arrived Megan and I set up each group with the guidelines, large paper, and colorful markers.
During the lesson we deepened expectations by having our participants involved in different divergent exercises to deepen their understanding. We truly tried to strive for quantity in this exercise by encouraging many ideas and setting a timer for each round of brainstorming - with each timer becoming shorter and shorter after each round. Our groups were all successful with increasing the amount of ideas they came up with for each round even though time was decreasing! It was also loads of fun hearing the ideas the art teachers came up with when we read them aloud afterwards.
After the lesson, we extended the learning with a Think-Pair-Share for teachers to reflect on the activities we did and how they could extend them into their own classrooms or even their personal lives. Finally, we provided a take home sheet of resources so our participants could apply their learning after they left.
