Summer Lecture Series: These are a series of talks, which deal with the clinical approach to common problems encountered in the field of Gastroenterology. These are held on Tuesdays at 5:00pm in place of the Core Curriculum lectures and Grand Rounds during July and August. The conference is in person (VCU: faculty lounge conference room, VA: GI conference room) and mandatory for first/second year follows.
Multidisciplinary Conference: This Multidisciplinary conference is the major clinical conference held weekly at both the VAMC and at VCUHS. In these multidisciplinary conferences, cases are selected and discussed by a variety of specialists (surgeons, radiologists and gastroenterologists) who offer their opinions regarding the patient’s diagnostic work-up, therapy, and disposition. These exercises assist the trainees in acquiring additional knowledge on a wide range of patients with different clinical problems.
The VCU conference was previously held in the Radiology conference room every Tuesday at 4:30-5:30 PM. All fellows on rotations at VCU or Research are expected to attend (currently virtual until further notice).
The VA conference is every Wednesday from 8:00-9:00AM via Teams. All fellows at the VA are expected to attend.
GI Grand Rounds: This is the major formal educational conference every week. It is held weekly for 9-10 months of the year on Thursdays from 5:00pm – 6:00pm via zoom. Presenters are faculty members from within the division, selected faculty members from other departments or Universities, along with GI fellows under the mentorship of a specific faculty member. Selected faculty members who are active researchers also present grand rounds. Journal club, Morbidity and Mortality conference and board review sessions are also included periodically during Grand Rounds.
GI Journal Club: This is held once a month on Thursdays at 5:00pm. Two fellows will present each month. Each fellow will review a Major article related to Gastroenterology, Hepatology or Nutrition for approximately 30 minutes. A faculty mentor will be assigned for each presenting fellow. A PDF of the article should be sent out to the GI Division 7 days prior to the presentation to allow for lively discussion. GI M&M: This is held once a month on Thursdays at 5:00pm. Two fellows will present each month. Each fellow will present 1 case for 30 minutes including discussion (fellow does not personally have to be involved in the case). If you do not have a case in mind, feel free to discuss with other fellows, any attending, and/or send out an email to the department requesting a case. If there are any other services directly involved in the case, please give them 1 week notice so they can attend the conference.
Liver journal club/ Biopsy Conference: This is held at VCUHS on Monday at 4pm. Fellows rotating through Hepatology with Hepatology faculty review liver biopsies from the previous week.
Hepatology Sign-out Conference: This VCUHS Monday Morning conference starts the week at 7:30AM. It is a meeting of Hepatology attendings, Hepatology consult fellow, and Transplant Hepatology fellows to discuss the inpatient liver cases. The DHS fellow is encouraged to attend but not mandatory.
Liver Transplant Conference: This is held at VCUHS on Thursdays at 3PM. Mandatory for Transplant Hepatology fellow, highly encouraged for Hepatology consult fellow and DHS fellow.

HCC MDC: This is held at VCUHS on Tuesdays at noon. Mandatory for Ambulatory 2 rotation Fellow.
Edward Moore Lecture: This named lecture is given annually by visiting professors renowned for their expertise in a specific area of gastrointestinal or liver research.
Richmond Gut Club: These are industry sponsored talks that are offered every 2-3 months at a local restaurant. Currently on hiatus.
VCU Symposium: A Virginia Liver Symposium and Update in Gastroenterology is organized for community gastroenterologists and internists every spring by the faculty with participation of nationally known speakers from outside VCUHS and the VAMC. All trainees are required to attend this symposium. Free enrollment is available for all fellows every year.
National Meetings: Each fellows will have coverage to attend one national meeting (AASLD, ACG, or DDW). If you are a presenter in one of the annual conference, you are entitled to apply for Department of Internal Medicine scholarship of $1000.
