Significance: led veterans to quickly get married, have children, and encouraged economic growth.
G.I Bill of Rights
Description: AKA the Servicemen's Readjustment Act in 1944. Gave benefits to returning veterans.
Significance: veterans could use the benefits for unemployement, low interests on loans and mortgages, money for education.
Baby Boom
Description: a huge surge in birth rates (births per 1000 people)
Significance: people born in these years became known as the baby boomers.
New Technologies
Description: new drugs, new synthetic materials, and new inventions such as the jet engine.
Significance: American becomes the largest producer and Americans found jobs in aircraft, electrical, chemical, automobile, and food processing industries.
Suburbs
Description: residential areas with single - family homes, and private lawns, on the outskirts of the city.
Significance: middle - income families leave the cities to suburbs. Vibrant Downtowns become increasingly poor as wealthy residents leave for the suburbs.
Interstate Highway System
Description: created by the Federal Highway Act 1956 to establish a network of highways.
Significance: encouraged migration of middle class Americans to the suburbs and encouraged Americans to drive to work every morning along the same route.
