The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming education globally, offering innovative opportunities for both teaching and learning. Recognizing AI’s potential to reshape education, UNESCO has developed AI competency frameworks for teachers and students to guide educators and policymakers in building essential digital and AI-related skills, with a strong focus on ethical use, digital literacy, and pedagogical integration.
In Lao PDR, where digital transformation is a national priority, developing AI competencies among teachers is essential. AI has the potential to improve teaching methodologies, support personalized learning, foster critical thinking among students and enhance their learning outcomes. However, without a clearly defined, localized framework, teachers may face challenges in integrating AI effectively and ethically. A contextualized AI competency framework for teachers will empower them to confidently use AI tools, promote digital inclusivity, and contribute to a technologically advanced education system.
To support this effort, UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES), will lead the development of a contextualized AI competency framework for teachers in Lao PDR. The framework will align with national strategies, such as the Digital Strategy for Education 2025-2035, Lao Teacher Competency Framework, and ICT Competency Standards for Teachers (ICT-CST) in Lao PDR, while drawing from UNESCO’s global guidance.
