Academic Information for LAS Students

Academic Advising

All Incoming exchange students accepted into the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) will be assigned to an academic advisor in one of the College's departments. Your academic advisor will be your main point-of-contact for questions about course selection and registration. After being admitted to the college of LAS, you should contact your academic advisor to go over your academic plans for the semester. Be sure to write your University ID Number (UIN) in your emails to your Academic Advisor.

Course offerings

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has over 70 majors (fields of study) for students to choose from. Students are not required to take courses in their same major field of study that they have at their home university. Instead, it is recommended to take one or two courses from a field related to your plan of study at your home university to broaden your academic perspective. The course catalog can be found here. Please note that courses in Illinois will have a course number, for example ECON 101. The number in a course's title gives information about its level. Incoming exchange students should generally try to enroll in courses around the 200-400 level. It is NOT advised to take only 400-level courses, as these are usually quite advanced. Exchange students are also generally NOT able to register for 500-level courses.

Course Registration

Your LAS International Programs and Academic Advisors will do everything they can to help you enroll in the courses you wish to take. We cannot, however, guarantee space in all courses. Students should plan to be flexible with their coursework, especially when registering for courses listed in "Limited Programs" on this website. Exchange students meet with their academic advisors to plan their coursework, but LAS International Programs advisors can help you if you have questions about using the online course registration system.

Courses Outside of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Exchange students admitted to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are generally able to take coursework in all other colleges at the University of Illinois besides the College of Business, the College of Law and the College of Medicine. Please note, though, that some courses are only available to students in the college where the course is offered.
