2023 May Research Spotlight

Prashant Bhandari

GCPSA is thrilled to feature Prashant Bhandari. Prashant is about to graduate this May after completing his Ph.D. program in Horticultural Science. Under the mentorship of Dr. Tong Geon Lee at UF IFAS Gulf Coast Research and Education Center, Prashant focused his research on tomato genomics and bioinformatics.

Prashant was happy to share with us his motivation to start his journey in agricultural science, the highlights of his research, the challenges he overcame during graduate school, and his future plans after graduation.

Background

Prashant grew up in Chitwan, Nepal. Even though he was too young to realize it, he was building a strong knowledge and connection with the food system thanks to his family. His family grew rice, wheat, maize, and seasonal vegetables, and took great pride in being self-sufficient. He completed his bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Science from the Agriculture and Forestry University at Rampur. During his undergraduate, he noticed that food insecurity remained one of the biggest challenges for our species. For that reason, he decided to be part of the solution and continued his studies abroad pursuing his PhD degree from the University of Florida.

Ph.D. Journey

During his Ph.D. program, Prashant looked at recombination rates in segregating populations and conducted genetic mapping and genomic predictions of yield and horticultural traits on fresh-market tomatoes. His work enabled the development of resources for applied genetics and the pursuit of genetic gain.

Life in graduate school has been like a roller coaster ride for him. Behind the successful work he has completed, there have been challenges that he faced and overcame. One of the most significant challenges initially was struggles with self-doubt, self-criticism, and feeling unproductive.  However, extensive study in the history of his field provided him with the knowledge and confidence to mitigate his doubts. Furthermore, managing his expectations and not overwhelming himself helped him achieve a more positive mindset throughout the rest of his Ph.D. studies

Time to Relax

In general, the community of graduate students at GCREC provided an important source of support and engagement throughout his time here. Prashant, like many other students in the GCREC, actively participates in the weekly soccer games, sharing that this has been an effective way to de-stress and cultivate meaningful friendships with peers.

Future Plans

After graduation, Prashant will start his new position as a bioinformatics postdoctoral researcher with Dr. Ivan Baxter’s group at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, an independent, not-for-profit research institute dedicated to plant science located in the Creve Coeur community of Saint Louis County, Missouri. His primary research objective will revolve around examining the water use efficiency in different types of grasses, such as Setaria, using quantitative tools. The GCPSA and GCREC community wish Prashant the best in his next chapter!

Testimonial from Dr. Tong Geon Lee

For the past 4 years, I have had the privilege of serving as Mr. Prashant Bhandari’s supervisor. Mr. Bhandari is dependable and committed to excellence in his professional work. He is a hard worker and disciplined. He is distinguishable from his similarly qualified peers in the field for conducting plant genetics that results in applicable findings that powerfully aid ongoing efforts to improve advancement in plant science research and education. I wish him the best in his postdoctoral training at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, a highly prestigious institute in the US.
