This is the project that we work on with Microsoft Xbox Game Studios (World’s Edge) Age of Empire Team. Under the guidance of the Project Supervisor, Seb Grinke, and UCSC Professor, Michael John, we are able to develop a capture-the-flag kind of game.
We were able to use the tools that offer by AOE Team to modify our mod, including building a resource auto-generating system, making a customized map for the game, relics random generating, and auto-generate system.
MOD Description
At the center of the forest, there are 3 steles. They are as old as mountains; exist earlier than the oldest culture appeared. They are hard to understand; even the wisest scholar in the world still can’t parse them. One thing knows for sure, the king who owns those steles can stand at the top of the world! Are you ready to honor your king?
Gameplay Design
Use your special unit (monk) to compete for the relics around the center of the map and bring them back to the base.
The maximum number of players in this game is 2.
Winning condition: The player who collects 3 relics will win the competition.

Map Design
We built an arena-like map for players to compete those relics. We made the map not too huge for searching and bringing those relics back, but also not too small for players to enforce several strategies to earn their advantage.
Features
Passive resource generating:
Players don’t have villagers to gather resources. Instead, all resources are given every short interval.
Invincible player bases:
Players’ bases are protected by large walls that can’t be destroyed by the players' units and limited technologies, so the players can focus on flag capturing and strategies.
Tailored units/upgrades restrictions:
Players’ available units and tech upgrades are intentionally restricted to a certain level, and there is a population cap for players’ armies.
Relic FOW reveals:
The relic will be revealed in the Fog-of-War at the beginning of the game and keep revealing itself every several seconds if taken by a monk.
Random flag respawn:
Once a relic is stored in a monastery, a new relic will respawn at a random location around the center of the map with a short reveal period.
Complex tactical possibilities:
With different terrains like ambush forests, players can find multiple ways to strategize their moves and fight for the relic.
Objectives UI:
A clear user interface shows the players their objectives at the beginning of the game and tracks their progress throughout the game. There are also resource gain and flag respawn notices.
Resource automatically generated
Players still need to reach to a specific age to generate certain units or research certain tech
The view around the relic will be revealed every 10-15 seconds
