Time spend: 2 weeks
Afterlife is a short first-person shooter developed in Unity 2021 over the course of three weeks. Our objective was to create a visually engrossing mystery narrative combined with a fun first-person shooter. We also added some puzzles to spice up gameplay.
Since the project is about telling the story and the setting of the game world we build, we decided to put many interactable objects and narrations inside our game world. We are not directly telling the story to the players, like many FromSoftware games, we use those interactable objects and several environment events to give our players fragmental information. By putting all the information together, they can figure out the background of this world!
The world we built is trying to describe a world in the near future. In this world, the country we belong to has discovered a whole new energy resource. However, this discovery didn't lead the world into a better future, instead, it was utilized in weapons development and induced the Arms Race. Unfortunately, unlike in the real world's Cold War result, those competitions and conflicts between countries in the game have turned into wars and made the entire humans face their doom
The game will take place almost exclusively in one of the underground bunkers, which will have a dilapidated industrial aesthetic. Each room should either be a cavernous hall lined with damaged concrete, rusted metal, dusty furniture, and broken equipment, or a tight corridor lined with cold lights. The bunker should feel oppressive, which will motivate the player to escape. For a better expression of our worldview, we use several assets to support our project, and those assets are under similar characteristics and art styles as we described
To give sufficient space to set up all our fights and information delivery objects, we designed 7 rooms to meet the requirement (including one battle room that is not shown in the floor plan). For each room, we assigned different objects and functions, like for the Analysis room, which served as a tutorial that introduced players to our battle system and collecting information system. We provided different kinds of collectible information, battle events, and puzzles in different locations for players to experience
Puzzle
To have more fun while the players play our game and to make the entire atmosphere more like what we expected to be in a bunker, we set puzzles for players to break while they tried to pass some of the gates in the game. We designed several narrations to offer players clues and place them in different locations for players to look them up. It not only gave players the feeling about participating in the game but also made players willing to interact with the environment objects and read our information
