I AM twenty-six inches tall, shapely and well proportioned, my head perhaps a trifle too large. My hair is not black like the others’, but reddish, very stiff and thick, drawn back from the temples and the broad but not especially lofty brow. My face is beardless, but otherwise just like that of other men. My eyebrows meet. My bodily strength is considerable, particularly if I am annoyed. When the wrestling match was arranged between Jehoshaphat and myself I forced him onto his back after twenty minutes and strangled him. Since then I have been the only dwarf at this court.

MOST DWARFS are buffoons. They have to make jokes and play trick to make their masters and the guests laugh. I have never demeaned myself to anything like that. Nobody has even suggested that I should. My very appearance forbids such a use of me. My cast of countenance is unsuited to ridiculous pranks. And I never laugh. I am no buffoon. I am a dwarf and nothing but a dwarf.

Mido sesenta y seis centimetros, con proporciones bien formadas, mi cabeza quizás sea un poco más larga de lo debido. Mi cabello no es negro como el de los demás, sino rojizo, bastante tieso y grueso, que mantengo recogido desde mis sienes, mi frente es más ancha que alta. Soy lampiño, pero del resto soy como cualquier otro hombre. Tengo una uniceja. Mi fuerza es notable, especialmente cuando me enojo. Cuando se fijo una fecha para la pelea entre Josaphat y yo, luego de veite minutos lo hice caer de espalda y lo estrangulé. Desde entonces soy el único enano que queda en la corte.

La mayoría de los enanos son bufones. Su deber es el de contar chistes y hacer piruetas para complacer a sus amos y hacer reír a los invitados. Jamás me he rebajado a una tarea tan deshonrosa. Ni siquiera me han sugerido tal cosa. Mi apariencía no se presta para tales actos. Mi semblante imperturbable no es apto para ese tipo de chistes ridículos. Jamás sonrío. No soy un bufón. Soy un enano, ni más ni menos.

PRINCESS Teodora is very dependent on me. I carry her secret in my heart. I have never breathed a word of it, and if they stretched me on the rack in the torture chamber with all its horrors, even than I should never betray anything. Why? I do not know. I hate her and I should like to see her dead, burning in the fires of hell with her legs astraddle and the flames licking her foul belly. I hate her lascivious mode of life, the lewd missives which she makes me carry to her lovers, her words of love which burn against my heart. But I betray nothing. I am always risking my life for her.

Odio su estilo de vida tan lascivo, los mensajes lujuriosos que me hace enviarle a sus amantes, sus palabras de amor que me queman el pecho. Pero jamás traiciono. Y siempre arriesgo mi vida por ella.

I hate all her lovers. I have wanted to fling myself upon every one of them and pierce them with my dagger to see their blood flow. Most of all I hate Don Riccardo; she has had him for several years now, and it looks as though she never intended to get rid of him. I find him repulsive.

Sometimes she lets me come into her chamber before she has risen, and exposes herself in all her shamelessness. She is no longer young, her breasts sag as she lies in the bed, playing with her jewels and taking them out of the casket proffered by her handmaid. I cannot understand how anyone can love her. She has nothing which a man could find desirable. One can only see that once upon a time she was utterly beautiful.

Once I crept into her room as she lay sleeping with her detestable kitten beside her in bed and cut off its head with my dagger. Then I threw it out onto the dung heap beneath the castle window. I was so furious that I hardly knew what I was doing. That is to say, I knew only too well. I was carrying out a plan which had long been germinating during those revolting playtimes in the rose garden. She was inconsolable when she saw that it was gone, and when everybody said that of course it must be dead, she sickened with an unknown fever and was ill for a long time, so that I, thank goodness, did not have to see her.

En una ocasión entre silenciosamente en su habitación mientras dormía, yacía ahí junto a su detestable gato, al que decapité con mi daga. Más tarde lo arrojé al estercolero que se encuentra bajo la ventana del castillo. Estaba tan molesto que ni supe lo que hacía. Es decir, que sabía muy bien lo que hacía. Lleve a cabo mi plan que había conjurado durante aquellas insufribles sesiones de juego en el jardín de rosas. When at last she got up again, I was obliged to listen all the more to her woeful narrative of her darling’s fate, of the incredible thing which had happened. Nobody cared how the cat had disappeared, but the whole court had been upset because of some inexplicable drops of blood on the girl’s neck, which could be interpreted as an evil omen. Anything which can possibly be taken as an omen is of tremendous interest to them.

Cuando finalmente se recuperó, me vi obligado a escuchar su penosa historia sobre el terrible destino que había sufrido su amado animal, sobre aquel increible suceso que había ocurrido. A nadie le importó cómo desapareció el gato, pero la corte entera se alteró cuando se encontraron gotas de sangre en el cuello de la niña, lo que podría simbolizar un mal augurio. Cualquier cosa que pueda ser interpretada como un augurio les causa un interés tremendo.

No, NO, this is monstrous. It is more upset­ting than anything else which has happened dur­ing this terrible time! The earth reels beneath my feet and I have no more faith in anything under the sun!

Why should our two people go on destroying each other, what is the use of all these meaningless wars? They have been going on intermittently for two centuries , and neither has been able definitely to defeat the other, so that both have been the losers in this eternal warfare. It has brought us nothing but famine and misery. How much better it would be if we could live in peace and mutual under­standing, so that our countries could flourish and rejoice as they should have done from the begin­ning.

THE ENEMY raised the Stege and went away as soon as the plague began to spread among them. Boccarossa's mercenaries have no desire to fight such a foe.

"El ejército enemigo ha levantado el sitio" (¿desmontado su campamento?) y se fueron tan pronto como la plaga comenzó a propagarse entre ellos. Los mercenarios de Boccarossa no desean enfrentarse a un adversario como ese.

And so, the plague has put an end to the war as nothing else could have done. Both countries are pillaged, particularly our own. The populations are probably too exhausted after two wars to be able to go on. Montanza has achieved nothing and maybe his troops will take the pest home with them.

More and more people are dying here in the palace. The black hangings in honor of Angelica are still up and match the somber atmosphere.

I am quite excluded from the service of the court. Nobody summons me any longer, nobody has any orders for me. Least of all the Prince; I never set eyes on him at all. I can see on everybody's faces that there is some­thing in the wind, but I do not know what it can be.

Has somebody maligned me ?

I have withdrawn altogether to the dwarfs' apartment where I live quite alone. I do not even go down to eat, but keep myself alive on a little old bread which I have up here. It is quite sufficient, I have never wanted much.

I sit here alone under the low ceiling, deep in thought.

I like this utter solitude more and more.

Y así, la plaga marcó el final de una batalla que parecía interminable. Ambos países estan sumidos en la miseria, especialmente el nuestro. Los pueblos estan demasiado exhaustos luego de dos guerras como para seguir adelante. Montanza no logró nada y con suerte sus tropas contagiarán a los habitantes de su país con la peste.

Cada vez hay más muertos acá en el castillo. Las colgaduras negras todavía penden en honor a Angelica, y van muy a juego con este ambiente sombrío.

Debo decir que se me ha excluído de los servicios de la corte. Ya nadie solicita mi ayuda, nadie tiene ordenes para mí. Mucho menos el principe; no lo he visto más. Puedo ver en las caras de la gente que el viento trajo algo, pero aún no sé qué pueda ser.

¿Acaso alguien me difamó?

Me he retirado del todo a los aposentos para enanos, aquí vivo en soledad. Ni siquera salgo para comer, me contento con un poco de pan viejo que había guardado. Con esto me basta, jamás he requerido grandes cantidades de comida.

Me siento debajo de este techo bajo, sumergido en mis pensamientos.

Cada vez disfruto más y más de esta soledad.
