Project 5 - On authors, styles and philosophy

Ever since my early teen years I found passion in reading. I remember very clearly walking in the bookstore and being immediately drawn by the macabre: the cover of a book showed a hooded man holding tightly onto a bloody knife with a swastika carved in the lustrous steel. I fell in love. Owning the book felt like a shady secret; as if I was keeping a skeleton in my closet. After that, I read many thriller and horror novels, but I only understood what love really felt like after I read in depth a short story by Poe.

Desde jovén me ha apasionado leer. Recuerdó entrar en la librería e inmediatamente sentirme atraída por lo macabro: la portada de un libro mostraba a un hombre encapuchado sosteniendo con firmeza un cuchillo ensangrentado con una esvastica tallada en el lustroso acero. Me enamoré. Poseer el libro se sentía como un secreto turbio; como si estuviese escondiendo un muerto en el armario. Luego de ese, leí muchas novelas de horror y de thriller, pero solo comprendí el significado de amar luego de leer y analizar un cuento corto de Poe.

He was, by far, the greatest horror writer that I had encountered; his short stories are filled with symbolism that kept me up at night, as I tried to unravel their meaning. The pace of his narrative is slow, like taking a stroll through a valley of death, and their tone, crazed and terrifying, feels somewhat melancholy as well. It’s a perfect combination.

But horror without narrative is usually just purposeless gore. It takes talent and skill to make someone’s skin crawl. The narrative and the descriptive styles are the perfect ingredients to create a disturbing story. That’s what made Poe great; he understood the human nature better than most people do, and realized that everyone hides a monster within themselves.

Jamás había me había topado con un escritor de horror como él; sus historias cortas estaban llenas de simbolismos que me mantenían despierta en las noches, intentando descubrir su significado. El ritmo se su narrativa es lento, así como dar un paseo por un valle de la muerte, y su tono, perturbado y terrorífico, en parte se siente melancólico. Es la combinación perfecta.

Pero el horror sin narrativa es por lo general gore sin sentido. Se necesita talento y habilidad para ponerle los pelos de punta a alguien. El estilo narrativo y descriptivo son los ingredentes perfectos para inventar una historia perturbadora. Eso es lo que hace a Poe un maestro; él entendía la naturaleza humana mejor que muchos, y comprendió que todos ocultamos monstruos dentro de nosotros.

However, for me literature is a way of entertainment and pleasure must remain just that, as pleasure. From Stephen King, to H.P Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe, their monsters and killers are an amazing fuel to feed the imagination, but in reality I am a little bit of a rationalist. In all truth, I find it impossible to solely identify with just one philosophical movement; I do like to base most of my decision on logic and knowledge, but sometimes my emotions get the best of me. Moreover, I consider that adding a little bit of Hedonism every once in a while can be useful in order to improve our mood and happiness levels, although acting with the only purpose of achieving pleasure and happiness can be extremely dangerous, reckless, and in some cases, illegal.

Unfortunately, my knowledge of philosophy is vague and scarce, but, if there is any philosophical movement that promotes adopting different approaches to different scenarios and problems, then that's the one that I identify myself with.

Sin embargo, la literatura es un medio de entretenimiento, y así debe permanecer, como un placer. Desde Stephen King, hasta H.P Lovecraft y Edgar Allan Poe, sus monstruos y asesinos son un combustible maravillo para alimentar la imaginación, pero en la cotidianidad, yo soy más del tipo racionalista. Para ser sincera, me es imposible identificarme con un solo movimiento filosófico; me gusta basar mis decisiones en la lógica y el conocimiento, pero a veces mis emociones me ganan. Además, considero que añadir un poquito de hedonismo de vez en cuando ayuda a mejorar nuestro estado de ánimo y nuestros niveles de felicidad, aunque actuar con el único próposito de obtener placer y felicidad puede ser extremadamente peligroso, imprudente, y en algunos casos, ilegal.

Por desgracia, mis conocimientos sobre filosofía son vagos e incompletos, pero, sin duda alguna me identificaría con un movimiento filosófico que este a favor de adoptar diferentes soluciones ante diferentes escenarios y problemas.
