"Blind Spots" Inquiry Materials: Andy Porter

Rather than immediately assume students don't have much contact with the more marginalized voices in our world, I thought I'd instead plan an inquiry unit that helped us all to think about who might be in those groups, and what sorts of rescources might exist to help us to understand their stories, and how they fit into ours.

SBG Anticipation Guide SL.docx

students complete the Anticipation guide prior to reading. After finishing the book and doing extensive study of the author and era, they revisit the statements and use evidence from the text to argue what the author's personal view would have been in the time period in which the book was written.

This book explores 8 families of “action” or “drama in education” strategies that are incredibly powerful and rarely used by US educators.  The families include Role Playing and Revolving Role Play, Writing in Role, Hotseating, Mantle of the Expert, Digital Drama, Tableaux, Reenactments, and Discussion Dramas.  Each set of drama or action strategies supports and promotes very specific strategies of learning, reading engagement, comprehension, interpretation and response by making these strategies visible and usable in concrete form.
