THIS GROUP IS CLOSED FOR THE FORSEEABLE FUTURE
Lavras is a land of constant change and renewal, with heavy volcanic activity frequently changing the surface landscape. Some areas are green and vibrant - nearly tropical. Others are charred wasteland recently wiped clean by lava flows.
A vast network of eroded caverns and lava tunnels, with spaces open to the sky high above to permit water and plantlife to collect below into veritable forests. Some areas are for common use, other smaller chambers make personal densites, caches, and meeting places. Bats and glow worms also call these caves home, along with various smaller cave-adapted insects, fish, reptiles, and amphibians.
A few streams and crumbled ceiling create major entryways into the tunnels. These are heavily guarded inside and out.
In some areas, lava pools up and flows through rocky tunnels. Noxious fumes and unpredictable spurts of molten rock make these areas deadly to linger in, but it an easy source of fire and waste disposal. Experienced Colony members keep close eye on the activity of lava above and below ground, in order to keep the Colony safe.
Volcanic activity causes formation of sulfur springs and geysers, providing access to a valuable crafting ingredient and providing pockets of (relatively) safe warmth above ground in winter. These waters are not usually safe to drink, but many are an appropriate temperature to soak in, which can ease aching joints and muscles.
Bubbling tar and hidden pitfalls disguised as water or mud alike dot the landscape, making for a deadly trap to anyone not realizing the smell and stickiness are dangerous. Lavras uses tar carefully gathered for some of its experimental medicines, and to help with keeping flames lit.
Running through the woodland is a slot canyon that usually has a shallow stream running through it. There are a few entrances to Lavras Caves through it, but getting into and out of the narrow canyon is not always practical. While some areas are too rocky and steep for plants to take hold, others are covered with mosses and ferns, and even a few resilient trees.
