The Ocarina glitch allows you to walk through certain objects and walk above rooms, allowing for many large tricks and sequence breaks.
There are currently 5 different methods to activate the Ocarina Glitch, the main method being off staircases:
Staircase OG
Doorway OG
Cutscene OG
Key Block OG
Textbox OG
For this method, you need the Ocarina of Wind and a staircase that leads to another room/screen (mainly staircases in dungeons as well as pond stairs).
To activate the glitch, get in front of the staircase, then press up and play the Ocarina 1 frame afterwards. If done correctly, Link will neither play the Ocarina nor walk up/down the stairs, and everything in the room freezes.
Link visibly plays the ocarina: Either you pressed the Ocarina the same frame as the Up input (or earlier), or the Up input was released too quickly (must be held for a minimum of 3 frames, maximum of 9 frames).
Link walks down the stairs (no ocarina sound): The Ocarina was pressed too late after the Up input.
Link walks down the stairs (with ocarina sound): The Ocarina Glitch was performed correctly, but the Up input was held for too long and link walked down the stairs cancelling the glitch (must be held for a minimum of 3 frames, maximum of 9 frames).
Link doesn't walk down the stairs, Ocarina sound is heard but link doesn't visibly play the ocarina: Ocarina Glitch was successful.
While Link is still somewhat inside the staircase, you can just easily walk out of it. If you hold up for too long, Link will pop out of the staircase and walk down the stairs, cancelling the Ocarina Glitch, so make you sure only tap the button.
While in the frozen time state you are in Stage 1 Ocarina Glitch.
You cannot pause
Rolling will softlock the game
Running into a wall with the Pegasus Boots will softlock the game
Jumping off of a ledge will softlock the game
Jumping into a hole with the Roc's Cape will softlock the game
Talking with NPCs will softlock the game
Pushing something like pots will softlock the game
You can walk through (most) NPCs
Link can walk over most tiles without the tile affecting link, such as walking over water tiles or walking over stair tiles.
Link cannot create clones
Link can interact with minish portals without triggering the sparkle animation (important for the Portal Jump Storage)
Going into another room by scrolling the map (not loading a completely new area like going up a staircase or leaving a dungeon where the screen flashes white/black) will unfreeze everything. The above effects will change but you still have the Ocarina Glitch active, this is known as Stage 2 Ocarina Glitch. Playing the Ocarina will completely cancel the freeze and all effects of the Ocarina Glitch. Ocarina Glitch can be switched from Stage 1 to Stage 2 but not back to Stage 1 again, another method of reaching Stage 2 while remaining on the same screen is by getting fairy revived. Any additional rooms you visit with a screen scrolling transion won't change the OG Stage.
You can pause
Rolling won't softlock the game, Links floor tile updates during the roll
Dashing into a wall won't softlock the game, when link lands from the bonk it will update links floor tile
Jumping off of a ledge won't softlock the game, this also lowers link's layer
Jumping into a hole with the Roc's Cape won't softlock the game
Talking with NPCs won't softlock the game
Pushing something like pots won't softlock the game
You can walk through (most) NPCs (However some NPC's become solid again)
Link can walk over most tiles without the tile affecting link, such as walking over water tiles or walking over stair tiles.
Link cannot create clones
Link cannot interact with minish portals without triggering the sparkle animation (important for the Portal Jump Storage)
While the glitch is active, your current standing tile only updates in certain situations such as when first loading a room or when doing a roll. This means you cannot fall into pits, and you can go up stairs to access a higher layer of a room, but cannot go down again. Once you are on a higher layer of the room, you will be able to walk over everything on the lower layer, including walls. However, if you transition the screen while over a lower layer, your height will be set back to the lower layer and you will not be able to walk over walls as you could before, so be careful to transition the screen to where you start on the same height level as the previous screen.
There aren't many ways to access a lower layer again, so once you go up a layer, you will have to stay there in most rooms. The current known methods to access a lower layer again are:
Rolling down stairs that lead to a higher layer
Jumping down ledges (sometimes need to cancel OG before you can jump down), Doorframes are excellent for jumping off.
Touching a lily pad
While in the frozen room state, using items that make a sprite appear like the Cane of Pacci or the Bow will make the sprite appear and stay in place. You can repeatedly use items to create more sprites or mess with existing sprites and have them stay in place, then use the Ocarina to unfreeze and have everything go off at once. Creating too many sprites will cause sprites to start disappearing or flickering, though the collision remains. Unfortunately, it has no known uses, but it's fun to play around with.
Uses for the Ocarina Glitch:
Any%:
Accessing Temple of Droplets without Flippers
Temple of Droplets sequence breaks
Palace of Winds early
Dark Hyrule Castle sequence breaks
100%:
"Infinite" Kinstone Farm
Temple of Droplets sequence breaks
Palace of Winds early
Dark Hyrule Castle sequence breaks
More details on setups and uses on its own page.
If you open a door without entering the house, you can activate the Ocarina Glitch using the open doorway.
Methods for opening the door include:
Dying and reviving with a fairy the frame you open the door
Using an NPC to push you out of the doorway after you open the door
Have a cutscene trigger to cancel you out of the walking animation
This is currently used to:
Enter Temple of Droplets without the Flippers. [All Any% Routes]
Reach the Pink Tingle without the Red Sword. [Any%: Octo Clip]
Historic uses for this have been:
Reach the Power Bracelets early.
You can activate the Ocarina Glitch off of certain cutscenes by playing the Ocarina on the same frame the cutscene starts. Cutscenes where a door opens seem to work best for this.
By standing above a key block, playing the Ocarina and then using a small key on the key block by pressing R, the animation will get interrupted and the Ocarina Glitch activates. Since there aren't many key blocks in the game, there is only 1 known place where this is possible.
There is currently no known use for this method.
Playing the Ocarina and closing/opening a textbox during the animation will cancel it and activate the Ocarina Glitch. There is currently only 1 known place where this is possible.
There is currently no known use for this method.
If you die while pushing an object, revive, and do the Ocarina Glitch while the object is still moving, you will be able to walk through the object as long as the Ocarina Glitch is active.
There is currently no known use for this glitch.
