It Makes You Laugh

Raktotpala Pujari

So I robe it as a clown-

Shoving it in the abditory

Covering it with sparkling veils:

Heavy pretty veils.

Yesterday it was Red,

Today’s one is Green

Tomorrow? I’ll make another that you wish.

I’ll seal it,

Stitch it to my skin,

And keep it on the stage for you

To smell, to see, to touch

But never to hear-

Never to tear off the wig,

Bright, sickening wig.

The plastic smile that I wear,

The grey songs that I guise in perilous pink-

I do it for the cheers,

I do it for the screams,

I do it for me to swing.

I’ll cover my eyes,

For it tries to touch those halcyon dreams,

And rupture my ribs and skull

To float like the exquisite siren

to kill that screeching aviothic

And make you laugh,

I’ll use those dust of final curtain

To make a home of fog and

I strangled it, the peiskos

I’ll walk again

Through the same damned path,

To open the curtains for you

And laugh with the echo of a gruesome clown.
