When Ms. Berman was hired as assistant superintendent in the middle of last year, the vice principal position became vacant for about half a school year. Mr. Merrill and Mr. Corrigan had to take on more responsibility around the school while being down a vice principal. But, by the end of last year Mr. Beaver was hired to take on the position.
Before coming to MHS he worked as a special education teacher and form team leader of the 11th grade at Salem Academy Charter School for 11 years. Before that he worked at the North Shore Consortium, but he first worked in the prison system. Therefore, Mr. Beaver says that he “got into education late in the game”. He decided to go into the education field because his wife was a teacher. He believed that he would be good at the job as well because he was good with kids. They also wanted to have a similar work schedule so they could spend more time together and with their own children. Mr. Beaver has three children, the oldest daughter is 21 and he has two younger sons who are 19 and 17. As they are getting older Mr. Beaver really enjoys seeing them grow up and being present in their lives.
In his own education, Mr. Beaver has three degrees. One of those is a bachelor's in psychology with criminal justice as his minor. He also has a masters in special education and his CAGs which is a certification to be able to be a Vice Principal or higher. To attain those degrees he went to Arizona State, New Mexico Highlands University, and Salem State.
Outside of school, Mr. Beaver says he really enjoys camping and hiking. And he used to coach youth football and lacrosse for a long time which he loved. In addition, he has an appreciation for reading which has grown “more as I am getting older” he states. Overall he loves spending time with his family the most and really cares about seeing his three kids grow up by going to sporting events and other activities.
So far Mr. Beaver says his time at MHS has been great. He says he loves the students because they have been “very gracious and welcoming”. And the teachers have been as well. He mentions that he has been having a great time working with his colleagues principal Mr. Merrill, vice principal Mr. Corrigan, and attendance secretary Linda Piazza. This year Mr. Beaver really wants to focus on building relationships with the students and their parents. He believes that parental communication is extremely important to insure the success of their children. Parents and teachers need to work together and be partners to make sure “their children get their academic needs met” because no one knows their kids better than their parents. Mr. Beaver has first hand experience on this. Since he has 3 kids he knows how important it is to know what is going on with your children at school. Therefore, he wants to make sure parents “get the level they deserve and need from us as a school.”
We are all happy to have Vice Principal, Mr. Beaver as the new addition to MHS and we appreciate all the hard work he has already done in only a few months on the job.
