The Island of Enchantment
A SPECIAL VACATION FOR CINDY
A very special gift the parents give for their 5 years old daughter. See below

Step into history as you wander the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan. The pastel-colored colonial houses, lively plazas, and centuries-old forts such as Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal make this neighborhood a living museum. Beyond history, the area is filled with cafés, art galleries, and boutique shops, blending the old-world charm with modern Caribbean flair.
El Yunque is a treasure for nature lovers. As the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, it offers hiking trails through lush greenery, natural pools under cascading waterfalls, and breathtaking viewpoints. The sound of coquí frogs and the dense canopy make every visit a truly immersive experience. It’s a reminder of the island’s wild, untamed beauty.

Few experiences in the world compare to watching the waters of Puerto Rico glow in the dark. The island is home to three bioluminescent bays, the most famous being Mosquito Bay on Vieques. As you kayak at night, microorganisms in the water light up with every movement, creating a surreal blue-green glow. It’s a natural wonder that makes visitors feel like they’ve stepped into a dream.

A SPECIAL VACATION FOR CINDY
I and my husband had promised to our daughter Cindy that we would have a special vacations this year. She wanted a place with a lot of sun and beaches And also some child attractions. So we chose Puerto Rico. It had everything Cindy dreamed of — warm beaches, gentle waves, and even a rainforest full of singing frogs.
We arrived with sunscreen, swimsuits, and a promise to laugh more than ever. Cindy’s eyes lit up when she saw the ocean for the first time. My husband squeezed my hand. We knew we had made the right choice.
We landed under a cloudless sky, the Caribbean sun already warming the tarmac. Cindy pressed her face to the airplane window, mesmerized by the turquoise sea below. At the hotel, she barely let us check in — her sandals were off, and she was tugging our hands toward the beach. I had to go with her directly to the beach and let David take care of the check-in details and bring our luggage to our room.
The sand was soft and golden, the water warm and gentle. Cindy ran straight into the shallows, squealing as the waves kissed her toes. After David finally joined us with his baht shorts I had my chance to go to the toilet and put on my bikini to finally enjoy the beach me too. We spend the afternoon building sandcastles, collecting shells, and letting the rhythm of the island settle into our bones. That evening, we dined at the hotel restaurant with Cindy asleep in my lap, salt still clinging to her skin and dreams already forming. She was so exhausted I had to have my shower with her before finally putting her in bed.
We drove inland toward El Yunque, Puerto Rico’s lush rainforest. The winding road climbed into misty hills. Cindy was upset at first, but when we told her about the waterfall she became excited about it and pulled us as she did in the hotel towards the beach
We went to a walk in the jungle. We chose a short, family-friendly trail that led to a small waterfall. Along the way, we heard the melodic chirps of the coquí frogs — tiny creatures with voices bigger than their bodies. Cindy searched for them under leaves, whispering “hello” to every rustle.
At the waterfall, she splashed in the stream while we rested on mossy rocks. The forest felt alive, breathing around us. On the way back, she fell asleep in the car, clutching a plush coquí we’d bought at the visitor center. Once againI had to shower her and put her in bed while she was already sleeping.
Old San Juan greeted us with cobblestone streets and pastel buildings. At El Morro, the massive fortress overlooking the sea, Cindy became a pirate captain in her own story.
We bought a kite — blue with yellow stars — and joined local families flying them on the grassy fields. Cindy ran with her dad, laughing as the kite soared above the ramparts. After a lunch in a typical local restaurant, we explored the fortress tunnels and cannon platforms. Cindy asked about soldiers and ships and imagined defending the island with her crew.
We ended the day with coconut ice cream, sitting on the fortress wall as the sun dipped into the Atlantic. I finally had the opportunity to arrive the bedroom with Cindy awaken. But not for long. She slept almost instantly as I put her in the bed.
The morning began with wonder. At a butterfly garden, Cindy held a delicate monarch on her finger, eyes wide with awe. “She likes me,” she whispered.
After lunch we headed to the Museo del Niño in Carolina — a paradise for kids. Cindy piloted a mock airplane, built towers with giant blocks, and played chef in a miniature kitchen. We followed her through every exhibit, laughing and learning together.
It was a day of pure childhood joy, where imagination had no limits and every room held a new surprise.
After a passion fruit ice cream, we went back to the hotel where she slept instantly as on the day before.
On the next day Cindy jumped out of the bed excited for the next adventure. “What we will do today?”, she asked. But we kept the surprise up we got there.
Luquillo welcomed us with calm, shallow waters perfect for Cindy to swim safely. We set up under a palm tree, laid out towels, and let the day unfold slowly.
Cindy played with other children, floated on a flamingo-shaped tube, and tried to catch tiny fish with her hands. Afterward, we explored the famous kioskos — a row of food stalls offering Puerto Rican delights. We tried alcapurrias, fresh fruit juices, and Cindy’s favorite: coconut ice cream served in its shell.
As music played from a nearby speaker, she danced barefoot in the sand, twirling with joy. David danced with her in his lap up to he realized she was already asleep. Than, we went back to our room to prepare to another day.
The next day we spend at the beach of the hotel again. But we told Cindy not to exaggerate for we had plans to the night. It was hard to hold her, but she was curious about our night excursion. So she saved some energy so she was awaken to follow our night excursion.
At dusk, we drove to Fajardo for a guided kayak tour of Laguna Grande. Cindy sat between us in the kayak, wrapped in a life vest, her eyes scanning the darkening water.
As we paddled, the water began to glow. Every stroke lit up a trail of blue light — bioluminescence dancing beneath us. Cindy gasped. “It’s like the ocean is alive,” she said.
We floated in silence, surrounded by stars above and glowing water below. It was a moment of quiet magic, one we knew we’d never forget.
Our final morning arrived too soon. We packed slowly, reluctant to leave. At Paseo Caribe, we strolled along the marina, watching boats sway and gulls circle overhead.
Cindy chose a ceramic coquí and a necklace made of tiny shells. We sat on a bench facing the sea, the breeze soft and warm. “Can we come back next year?” she asked, hugging us both.
We smiled. Maybe we will. Because Puerto Rico had become more than a destination — it had become a memory stitched into our hearts.
Cindy could not help but cry on our way to the airport. But I know she would never forget those moments we spend there. And so won’t me and David.
