THE PATH OF RECONNECTION IN CURAÇAO
When I started my relationship with my husband, the passion dominated me. Actually both of us.We used to be fire almost all the time we spent together. We laughed loud, kissed often, and made plans like the world was ours. The marriage was the inevitable consequence of that relationship.
Then the routine and the responsibilities came. At first, we faced those challenges together and maintained the fire on. But somewhere along the way, the fire dimmed. As time passed, the routine started to erode and slowly extinguish that intense fire that was the mark of our relationship when it started. It was not a fight. Not a betrayal. Just… silence. Routine seemed to have became more important than the love and the fire that lead us to choose each other as life partners. The slow erosion of joy.
More than once I heard unspoken words pouring out of his mouth that showed me that separation thoughts were passing through his head. And I must confess that once or twice I thought about that too. But then I remembered how intense our relationship once was and decided to continue to fight for my marriage. But if the routine continue to erode our relationship, the separation would be the obvious solution to a lifetime of a tedious life that our lives had turned to. We stopped looking at each other. Stopped asking questions. Stopped dreaming. No kids. No drama. Just two people drifting apart in the same house.
At that point I found out that something different had to be introduced in our relationship. Some new element that would break that routine that extinguished the fire that had led us to start a live together. A week in a tropical paradise could be this break through to stop this slow but continuous estrangement that was damaging our lives. Among several options, I chose Curaçao, a small island in the Caribbean where we could find sun, sea and a time out of that so damaging routine. And, hopefully, the fire that once burnt in our hearts and made us chose each other to a lifetime union.
The airport was small, the air warm and salty. The taxi drove us past buildings painted like candy — turquoise, coral, lemon yellow. It felt like the island was trying to wake us up. The fact itself we were somewhere else made us start to talk and look each other again. Especially because this new place was so much different of the routine that corroded our love.
Our hotel faced the sea. After the traditional welcome drink we went to our room and put our bath clothes. There was still some time left to walk around, see the different landscape outside our routine and enjoy the sun the pools in the hotel and the beach in front of the hotel.
After a cinematographic sunset we had lunch in a romantic restaurant. For the first time in what seemed an eternity I felt the romance in the ambience. The candle on the table, scent of flowers in the air… A tiny spark appears where the fire made me surrender to an uncontrollable passion to a man that once was dominated to a passion of the same intensity.
The night was not as hot as once our nights together were. But at least I got a kiss of good night. Something that I had for the last time ages ago.
On the next day we decided to try some of the excursions offered by one of the many tourist companies in the hotel lobby. I had never snorkeled. My husband had done it once or twice in his life. We joined a snorkeling tour to Tugboat Beach. Underwater, the silence was different — not empty, but full. Fish darted like confetti. Coral bloomed like forgotten dreams. I just swam at the water surface looking the explosion of colors and the multitude of fish swimming among the towers of coral. My husband deared to dive to the bottom and touched some of the unreal structures I could only see from far.
Later, we drank cold beer on the sand. He smiled. “You look alive.” I hadn’t heard that in years.
At night we participated to a session of karaoke. He sang a song and committed a lot of errors. So did I we laughed about each other errors. At night I found out that it was the first time in more than an year that we laughed together.
On the next day we decided to visit Willemstad. After the breakfast we took a taxi to downtown ad started wandering through the historic buildings. The floating bridge, the murals, the laughter of strangers. We bought mangoes from a vendor who winked at us like he knew something we didn’t. We walked hand in hand for a long time. It was not the first time in after a long period. However, this time something was different. As we walked I felt some sort of energy flowing to me through his hands. Something flowed through his hand along my arm directly to my heart filling it with a heat that had long disappeared. He didn’t say a word about that, but somehow I knew that he was experimented the same feeling.
We danced to a street musician’s saxophone. Not well. Not planned. But together.
Back to the hotel we watched another cinematographic sunset inside a pool. Another romantic dinner in which the romance was there again in the air. Even stronger than before. That night our bed witnessed our love. It was not something I conceded to his wish, as it has been awfully often before our trip. I surrended to him completely. And I enjoyed every moment. As when happened in our honeymoon.
On the next day we hiked to the top of Christoffel Park. As on the day before we walked hand in hand. The sharing of energy through our hands happened again. But it was no longer something surprising or new to either of us. It was hot. We were sweaty. But when we reached the summit, the view hit us like truth — Curaçao spread below, wild and blue and unapologetically alive. A passioned kiss up there crowned our conquest. A double conquest: the hill and our love back.
That night, we ate grilled snapper by the sea. The waiter lit a candle. We didn’t ask him to. And our bed witnessed once more the passion that once dominated us and that has just came back.
On the next day we rented a car and drove without a map. Found a beach with no sign, no people, just wind and waves. We swam naked. We laughed like teenagers. Completely dominated by the passion we made love on a towel that smelled like sunscreen and salt. Something we wouldn’t dare to do not even during our honeymoon. The passion did not only showed up again. It was stronger. In an intensity we never had exerimented.
Afterward, we lay there, tangled and quiet. “I missed you,” I said. “I never stopped,” he whispered.
Back to hotel we had another romantic dinner. And in the bedrom… well it was no longer something new.
The next day we spent the day doing nothing. A hammock. A book. A nap. A kiss. Like a couple of teenagers discovering the love. At sunset, we kayaked along the coast. The cliffs glowed orange. The sea turned silver. We didn’t speak. We didn’t need to.
That night, we watched the moon rise from the sand. He held my hand like it was new.
The last day finally came. We packed slowly. The silence wasn’t heavy anymore. It was soft. We had found the fire that once burned inside our hearts. It was there, burning again. I remembered why I chose that man to be my husband. And I promised to myself I would never forget it again. He showed in his face that the passion was back to his heart too.
Ir flight back we were not strangers side by side as it seemed during the flight to Curaçao. The connexion was evident. We kissed during the flight and promised each other that the connexion we had achieved will never die. Even outside Curaçao.
