Races: Species of the Character; typically defines physical appearance, abilities, and culture.
Examples: Human, Elf, Dwarf, Halfling, Orc, Fairy, etc.
Classes: Special Training, Skills, and Role; typically defines how they interact in the world and battle.
Examples: Wizard, Bard, Fighter, Rogue, Barbarian, Druid, etc.
Scores differ per character and calculates the outcome of rolls, abilities, and personalities. Characters with higher scores will add bonuses to rolls and characters with lower scores may need to subtract.
Strength: Measures physical power and athleticism. It affects actions like lifting, carrying, and melee weapon attacks.
Dexterity: Measures agility, reflexes, and precision. It impacts actions like dodging, sneaking, and ranged weapon attacks.
Constitution: Measures health, stamina, and resilience. It affects hit points, the ability to hold breath, and resistance to poison and disease.
Intelligence: Measures mental acuity, reasoning, and memory. It influences skills like Arcana, History, Investigation, Nature, and Religion, and is also the basis for spellcasting for wizards.
Wisdom: Measures perception, intuition, and insight. It impacts skills like Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Perception, and Survival, and is also used for spellcasting by clerics and druids.
Charisma: Measures personality, charm, and leadership. It influences social interactions, persuasion, intimidation, and deception.
Dices are rolled to determine outcomes in the game. 1 is the lowest score and 20 is the highest. The DM ("Dungeon Master") will decide how the roll is interpreted in the game and will add rewards or consequences depending.
Roll a dice when the DM instructs. The DM will tell you what you are rolling for and you will calculate the outcome based on the dice roll plus abilities scores.
Role Playing: roll a D20 dice unless specified otherwise.
Ability Checks: When a character attempts an action that relies on their skills, like picking a lock or jumping a chasm, the DM will call for an ability check.
Example: Player states "I'm going to pickpocket the man on the street."
Saving Throws: When a character needs to resist a spell, trap, or other harmful effect, they make a saving throw.
Example: DM tells you that you walked into a trap with spikes on the bottom.
Attack Rolls: When a character attacks with a weapon or spell, they roll to see if their attack hits.
Example: Player states "I'm going to run up to the monster and hit it with my axe."
Personal Preference on a Decision: players may choose to roll the dice at their own discretion and reap the reward or consequence dealt by the DM.
You do not need to roll on actions with certainty of outcome, consent by other party provided, no impact on the story, or if you are using a resource that ensures success.
Battle: Each round is 6 seconds total.
Roll Initiative: Roll a D20 and add your character's initiative bonus. Let the DM know what you rolled when your dice range is called. This will determine the order.
Your Turn:
Optional: Move your character. Your speed is determined by Race and/or Class.
Choose an Action: announce your action (weapon, spell, etc).
Attack with a Weapon or Melee Attack:
Roll a D20 dice to see if your character hits the target.
If successful, roll the damage dice (amount of dice and dice type specified in the spell). Calculate the damage total and tell the DM.
Attack with a Spell:
Read description carefully. See if you need to roll to hit, or if the target needs to make a saving throw. Whoever needs to roll, will roll a D20 dice for the outcome.
If the spell has damage, roll the damage dice (amount of dice and dice type specified in the spell). Calculate the damage total and tell the DM.
If you are doing something creative with the spell, state it to the DM to see if it is allowed or occurs.
Hold an Action: state your intentions to the DM and describe the scenario in which your action will be triggered. Example: I will cast healing spell if the dragon attacks ____.
Optional: Bonus Action.
Optional: Move your character. Your speed is determined by Race and/or Class. If you did not move, you can also hold your action to move.
Another Players' or DM's Turn:
Your Character is Attacked: Saving Throw; roll D20 dice
See if your character has a resistance or special ability to stop the attack.
If not, roll a D20 dice and calculate with your Saving Throw amount. The DM will tell you what type of damage your character takes and the amount to subtract from your HP (Health Points)
Succeed: half damage
Fail: full damage plus any lingering effects
