Summary

Kiventh was serious even as a child. His mother died when he was born, and his father, the Lord Ruler of Astricia, could not dedicate the time to be a full-time parent to the boy. Kiventh grew up in a castle surrounded by tutors, maids, and other servants entrusted with his care and safety. It was only when his father became concerned that Kiventh was not being raised as his mother would have wished that Lord Ruler Graham went out of his way to find a companion for his son - Kamus, the ward of the current Master Records Keeper.

Kiventh didn't approve of the boy assigned to his company, finding his antics foolish and unnecessary. Why was it necessary to pilfering food from the kitchens when he could simply order a meal prepared? And what was the point in stealing away from the castle to go exploring? Didn't Kamus know it would only upset his caretakers?

After much arguing, and not a few scuffles, Kiventh was at last able to find the childish delight in sneaking out to their secret hiding place outside of the city; catching frogs in the garden ponds and leaving them in maids' apron pockets, and in general being a mischievous boy. His antics brought a smile to his father's face on more than one occasion - at last his son could be a child.

But like all boys, there came a day when Kiventh had to grow up. On a diplomatic trip to Balond, Graham and Kiventh were attacked by beasts the likes of which Kiventh had never seen. Kiventh himself was wounded in the battle, and was saved by his father, but at the cost of the Lord Ruler's life.

Barely of age at the time, Kiventh succeeded the throne to became one of the youngest Lord Ruler in recorded history; a fact that grated members of the Council of Twelve, who saw Kiventh as a child incapable of leading the country. A few even moved for a conservatorship to be put into place in favor of the council, but the motion failed. Kiventh was of age, if young, and as a legal adult there was no reason to take control from the new Lord Ruler.

But the experience stayed with Kiventh who, even after a decade, bears a constant need to prove himself not only to the council, but to other nations who look on Astricia as weaker under his rule. As such he is careful not to show weakness of character, and eager to build relationships with sympathetic kingdoms in Lithara.

Taking up his father's mission of unity, Kiventh set his sights on establishing ties with the kingdom of Falome, and set sale aboard his ship to the kingdom. But the ship was attacked on the coast of the Western continent, and Kiventh and his men attacked by the very creatures which had murdered his father a decade ago. The Lord Ruler barely managed to escape with his life by fleeing into the forests of L'Appilia - an act of desperation in its rawest. For it was well known any who entered the forests never left.

It was there that he was rescued by an elvish princess, Aurona, who took the time to coax him back to health. Kiventh found himself grow more attached to the young woman day by day, until finally he couldn't deny his feelings for her any longer, though both knew that to try for a relationship would be complicated at best. But after weeks of comfortable captivity in the Elvish kingdom, Kiventh won his bride, and together the two returned to Astricia, only to find an invasion at their doorsteps.

With the invasion repelled, Kiventh and Aurona now seek a way to secure the safety of Kiventh's homeland, a way to rule eventually Aurona's when the time comes, and the strength to overcome prejudice they face on both sides.
