"The Sophomore Initiative is a community-driven organization dedicated to expanding educational opportunities for people of all ages. We believe that access to knowledge is a powerful tool for personal and societal growth. Our mission is to support and enhance learning environments by donating books and video games to local libraries, ensuring that everyone has the chance to explore new worlds and ideas.
In addition to our library donations, we raise funds for a variety of causes that align with our core values of education, empowerment, and community-building. By fostering a love of learning and providing access to diverse resources, the Sophomore Initiative seeks to make a lasting impact on the lives of individuals and the communities we serve.
Who are we: A group of volunteers' who are passionate about helping ours and our surrounding communities have more access to education and learning. We want to enable those who want to learn to not have to fight any barriers to access information and educational resources. We also operate on a 100% revenue-to-donation model which means any and all money and other donations go back to our communities and charities. No one is paid or spending money on anything but helping the cause.
What do we do exactly:
On our site we promote free educational resources to be taken advantage of.
In our community our volunteers help collect and donate books and video games to their local libraries so that they can be continued to be enjoyed by anyone in the community.
Our volunteers take it upon themselves to find creative solutions to promote our cause. Some volunteers find used book lots on marketplaces and buy to donate, others raise money for charities that promote other causes we closely align with.
When did we start: We have been operating as individuals for a long time, but the official date we came together to form this network would be September 1st 2024.
Where are we located and operating: We don't have a set head quarters but our volunteers live in the metro twin cities area and give back to their local area.
Why are you doing this: We're doing this because we believe that education has the power to transform lives and communities. By providing access to books, games, and other learning tools, we can inspire curiosity, empower individuals, and create opportunities for growth. Our goal is to make education accessible to everyone, ensuring that no one is left behind on their journey to knowledge and success
How can I help: Please take it upon yourself to donate any unused books or video games to your local library. If it makes the difference, we can have a volunteer come and pick them up for you. If you are so moved by our cause, please check out our reputable charity section and you can donate directly to them!
At the heart of the Sophomore Initiative is our belief in the transformative power of education. We are committed to ensuring that everyone, regardless of background or circumstance, has access to the resources they need to learn, grow, and succeed. Education opens doors, creates opportunities, and fosters personal and community development. Through our donations and outreach, we strive to nurture curiosity and a lifelong love of learning, empowering individuals to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to the world around them.
We believe that access to educational resources should never be a privilege, but a right for all. The Sophomore Initiative is dedicated to breaking down barriers that prevent individuals from accessing books, games, and other learning tools. By providing these resources to libraries and community spaces, we ensure that knowledge is available to everyone, fostering a more equitable society where each person has the chance to thrive through learning.
Community is the foundation of everything we do at the Sophomore Initiative. We are committed to fostering strong connections within the communities we serve, understanding that collaboration leads to collective growth. Our donations to libraries and other educational spaces are not just about providing resources, but about bringing people together to learn, share, and inspire one another. By nurturing these bonds, we strengthen our communities and create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.

We believe that trust is earned through honesty and openness, which is why we are committed to operating with complete transparency in all of our actions. By upholding the highest ethical standards, we build strong, lasting relationships and ensure that our mission to expand educational access is carried out with the utmost respect for those we serve.
We recognize that we can achieve more together than we ever could alone. Collaboration is a key value for the Sophomore Initiative, and we work closely with libraries, community organizations, and supporters to maximize our reach and impact. By fostering strong partnerships and encouraging teamwork, we create a network of individuals and groups committed to the shared goal of expanding access to education and enriching lives.
Empowerment
Empowerment is central to our mission. We understand that providing educational resources is just the first step; true empowerment comes when individuals can use these tools to take charge of their own learning and future. The Sophomore Initiative supports individuals by offering the opportunities and support they need to grow, explore new ideas, and build confidence. By empowering people through education, we help them realize their potential and create lasting change in their communities.
Innovation drives our approach to education and community outreach. The world is changing rapidly, and so are the ways we learn. At the Sophomore Initiative, we embrace new ideas, technologies, and creative methods to ensure that the resources we provide are relevant and impactful. From video games that encourage problem-solving to digital learning tools, we seek out innovative ways to enrich educational experiences and inspire the next generation of learners.
Lifelong Learning
We believe that learning doesn’t stop at any age. The Sophomore Initiative is dedicated to promoting lifelong learning, encouraging curiosity and exploration from childhood through adulthood. Whether it’s through the books we donate, the games we offer, or the community programs we support, we aim to provide resources that inspire continuous growth. Lifelong learning enriches both individuals and communities, helping people adapt to change and stay engaged with the world around them.
Sustainability
Sustainability is essential to creating lasting impact, and at the Sophomore Initiative, we are focused on ensuring that our efforts have a long-term benefit. Many of us are curious, lifelong learners, and we’ve all used libraries at some point in our lives. Libraries offer so much more than just books; they are a hub for community engagement, learning, and access to valuable resources. Whether it's providing access to information, technology, or a quiet space to study, libraries serve as a cornerstone for education and personal development. We realized how vital libraries are to the community and wanted to contribute to their growth by donating materials that enrich learning and empower individuals. That’s how the Sophomore Initiative came to be—a way to help libraries continue to be a vital resource for everyone.
Libraries vary from county to county, but one thing they all share is a willingness to accept donations. If the books are in good condition and there’s demand for them, the library might add them to their shelves. If not, they may sell the books to the public for a small fee, which benefits the library while also offering affordable access to books for people to own. Either way, our donations help expand educational resources and give more people the opportunity to learn and grow, whether through borrowing or purchasing.
Everyone in a community benefits when everyone has access to education. By providing books, games, and learning tools, we help individuals of all ages grow, develop new skills, and gain knowledge. This not only empowers them personally but also strengthens the community as a whole. Education can help prevent issues like inequality, unemployment, and even crime by offering people the tools they need to succeed and contribute positively to society. Our efforts aim to create a ripple effect—helping individuals leads to healthier, more resilient communities.

Yes, we gladly accept donations of books and video games from the public! If it’s more convenient for you, we can arrange to pick them up. Alternatively, you can simply walk into your local library and donate them directly. Every contribution helps us expand educational resources and make a positive impact in the community!
We ensure that our donations reach those who need them most by partnering closely with local libraries and community organizations. We communicate regularly with library staff to understand their specific needs and the demographics they serve, allowing us to tailor our donations accordingly. Additionally, we focus on donating materials that promote inclusivity and cater to diverse audiences. By fostering these relationships and staying engaged with the community, we maximize the impact of our efforts and ensure that resources are accessible to everyone.
We welcome enthusiastic volunteers who want to make a difference. Most of our volunteers are independent go-getters who take initiative in their own unique ways. Here are a few ways you can get involved:
Collect donations – Gather books or video games from friends, family, or your community and donate them to local libraries.
Shop smart – Look for affordable books or games on marketplaces like eBay or Facebook to donate to libraries.
Host a fundraising event – If you’re passionate about a specific cause, consider organizing your own fundraising event. For example, one volunteer raised money by running a marathon and donated the proceeds to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Twin Cities.
What sets the Sophomore Initiative apart from other educational charities is our deep commitment to community engagement and our focus on libraries as vital resources. We recognize that libraries are not just places to borrow books; they are community hubs that foster learning, connection, and growth. Our approach is tailored to each community’s specific needs, ensuring that our donations directly support local initiatives and empower individuals. Additionally, we operate as a 100% revenue-to-charity organization, meaning that every donation goes directly to charitable causes without any administrative costs. We emphasize collaboration, inviting volunteers and community members to actively participate in our mission, making it a shared effort rather than a top-down approach. By promoting inclusivity, innovation, and accessibility, we strive to make a lasting impact in the lives of individuals and the communities we serve.
Yes, our individual volunteers primarily focus on helping out their local communities.
