Morale

Basics

All NPCs are subject to Morale checks.  The Morale Triggers listed below indicate when Morale checks need to be made, which the values needed listed underneath.

Morale checks are rolled on 2d10.  So long as the number rolled is equal to or under the NPC's modified Morale Rating, there is no effect.  NPCs that roll above their Morale Rating will freeze, flee, fight (indiscriminately), or otherwise act irrationally at the DM's discretion.

Morale Triggers

they have been surprised;

• faced by an obviously superior force;

• an ally is slain by magic;

• 25% of their group has fallen;

• 50% of their group has fallen;

• a companion is slain after more than 50% of the group has fallen;

• their leader has deserted or is slain;

• they are fighting an opponent they cannot harm;

• they are ordered to attempt a heroically dangerous task;

• they are offered a temptation (bribe, seduction, etc.)¹;

• they are ordered to act as a rear guard (covering a fighting withdrawal);

• they are ordered to use up or use a charge from a powerful magical item they own;

• they are offered a chance to surrender (and have met the conditions for one other morale check in this encounter);

• they are completely surrounded;

• rolling (successfully or no) a fear/horror/madness check

¹In this case, the morale check can be used to see if they agree or refuse
